Hinju Village
About Hinju Village

Hinju Village is located in the Sham Region, Khaltse Block of Leh District, about 10km from Fanjilla in Ladakh. It is a small village with twenty-four households and about 100 people. The road from Fanjilla is under construction and is presently being extended to Hinju. This will improve convenience and offer more scope for development of the Village. The Village has a primary school up to Class V with two teachers. Three of the teachers are from outside the Village and one resides in the Village. The school attracts about eight students from the Village providing them with their basic education needs.

All the households in the Village have been provided with solar lighting eq uipments subsidized by the government. The electricity generated by the solar power was unable to meet the secondary needs of the Village like lighting for students to study longer in the evening hours. In order to overcome this obstacle, the Village was granted with a MHPU (Micro Hydro Power Unit) 5kW to provide both primary and secondary needs of the Village. This MHPU was installed with a help from LEDeG in the year 2007 to address the issue of power shortage and helps in improving and raising the standard of living in the Village.

The primary occupation widespread here in this village is agriculture. There is also a presence of an SHG producing and selling vegetables using the greenhouses under a special scheme during the installation of the MHPU. The green peas of the Village are well-known and the farmers have an annual excess produce of 40-50 quintals which is sold to the government at Rs.25 per kg. Other than this the villagers also engage in other activities like guides and helpers for trekking during the tourist season. There is also a presence of home stays in the Village for providing night stay to the tourists.

MHPU

The MHPU installed in Hinju runs primarily from the month of end of April to end of October when the water flow is sufficient. The electricity generated from the MHPU was used for various purposes like running the flour mill and also in festivals and amusement activities at night. It has helped in improving the life and well-being of the Village, allowing them to celebrate festivals like New Year and Buddha Purnima (Lord Buddha’s Birthday) with greater enthusiasm. Moreover, it also made the stay for tourists more convenient and easy. The tariff was set at Rs.50/- per household using about three bulbs. Money was collected as tariff is used for paying (the Rs.600/- monthly) salary of the operator and the operating and maintenance charges for the MHPU. The lights are on till 11.30 pm. The Village has also applied for computers for the school to educate their children on computer operation knowledge under Sadbhavana, an Indian Army initiative. As Angchuk, a teacher in the Village says ‘There are a lot of advantages with the setup of MHPU. They are looking forward to running a computer education program with its help.’
