Sivasagar
About Sivasagar

Sivasagar earlier known as Sibsagar ("the ocean of Lord Shiva"), is a town in Upper Assam, situated about 350 kms north east of Guwahati. It is the district headquarters of the Sivasagar district.

It is famous for its Ahom monuments and palaces. Sivasagar today is also a main hub for oil and tea industries.

History of Sivasagar

Sivasagar, previously called Rangpur, was the capital of the Ahom empire from the period from 1699 to 1788. Ahoms reign Assam for about 6 centuries, till their empire fell to the Burmese in the year 1819 and their ruling class was all but wipe out.

The region was liberated by the British in the year 1825 but, due to the state of anarchy which exist, it was fully taken over in the year 1826. For administrative purposes it was splitted into 3 sub-divisions.

It is believed that the initial name of Sivasagar was - 'Kalansupar' taken from the name of 'Kalansu Gohain' who dwell in a village initially existed in the region where presently the Sivasagar tank is situated.

This town's main characteristic is the water body from which its name is originated. This is a 257-acre tank, also known as the Borpukhuri, which is at a higher altitude than the remaining town, with 3 temples on its banks. From these shrines, the most famous is the Sivadol, at an elevation of105 feet, which attracts large people on Shiv Ratri. The other shrines are the Devidol and Vishnudol. The shrines were founded by Kuwori Ambika, wife of Swargadeo Siba Singha, in the year 1734.

Climate of Sivasagar

The climate of Sivasagar is pleasant during the whole year. Owing to the Brahmaputra which is very near to the region, Sivasagar is characterised by high humidity, and the average rainfall of about 90 to 94 inches a year.
