Manas Wildlife Sanctuary

situated in Barpeta District, about 176 kms from Guwahati in the foothills of Bhutan. The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the India's most magnificent national park and a well known World heritage site. It is situated on the banks of the river Manas at the foothills of the Himalayas. It covers an area of 519.77 square kms. Its surroundings are even lovelier than those of the larger Kaziranga. Set in the thick jungle along the Bhutan border, the Manas wildlife sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife. This Tiger Reserve is one of the dense, most wild and least visited wildlife sanctuaries. It is also famous for its unique biodiversity. It has been justly called the loveliest wilderness in the country. Over half of the area is covered with tall grass and scattered patches of woodland with simul, khoir, udal, sida, bohera and kanchan trees.

 

Wildlife Attractions in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
Some of the wildlife animals which can be seen in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary are the Tigers, Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Wild Boar, Sambar, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer etc. Hundreds of the birds like Riverchats (White Capped Redstars), Forktails, Cormorants, Ruddy Shelduck, Indian Hornbill and the Great Pied Hornbill migrate here during winter. Otters are frequently seen in the Manas river. Between December and March, the river fish make it an angler's paradise.

Safari in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
In Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors can see wildlife riding on an elephant – that is the most suitable transport for viewing the rhinos, safe and secure and at a close range. The elephant ride starts from Mothanguri, inside the sanctuary. It is also possible to take a boat ride on the Manas river to view the birds and animals.

 

Best time to Visit the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary can be visited by jeep, or on the back of the elephant. The best season to visit the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to April. The Wildlife Sanctuary is closed from July to September.

There is good accommodation in furnished bungalows and forest lodges.

How to reach Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
By Air:

Guwahati, about 176 kms. away is the nearest airport to Manas Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Rail:

The nearest railway station is at Barpeta Road, about 40 kms. from Mothanguri with a metre gauge line to Guwahati and Kolkata.

By Road:
