Introduction of Jewellery and Gemstones

Rajasthan is well-known for its jewellery industry and it is one of the world's largest centres for hand-cutting of gems. It is India's main basis for valuable and invaluable stones like; Garnets, Ruby, Lapis lazuli, Emerald, Topaz, Agate, Amethyst, Carnelian, etc.

Rajasthan is also famous for the art of silver smithy, starting from anklets to earrings to head equipments. A lot of effort goes into its manufacturing since most of the rural communities wear silver ornaments. Besides silver, it is known for its Lac bangles, Kundan and Minakari shiny gold jewellery, uncut diamonds and emerald-cutting. Another most restricted art is 'thewa' from Chittaur popular for its gold work on glass. Some of the traditional decorations are Gokhrus (bracelets), Tussi (necklace), Pajebs (anklets), Rakhdi (head ornament), Baju Bandh (armlet), Adah (special necklace worn by Rajputs), etc.

Different types of Jewellery

Masculine Jewellery: Pride, a love of wealth and deep artistic sense gave the Rajas and Ranas of Rajasthan a great liking for jewellery. The men were as highly and amazingly dressed as the women, with jewellery that often match that of their wives. It was a status symbol and a convenient show of wealth, and as a result, power Turban jewellery was the privilege of king, his close family or the members of his associates (including his horse).

Silver Jewellery: Wearing jewellery in the villages represents social and economic status. One can find men and women are decorated with elaborate silver jewellery as rings, pedants, bracelets, nose pins etc from foot parts to head. Even today some of the most traditional patterns are found in silver jewellery.

Feminine Jewellery: Feminine jewellery is more composite than masculine jewellery. Jewellery in India is worn as a complete ensemble and not as an ornament. It is thus quite acceptable to wear more than one necklace around the neck, also in the ears, on the toes and fingers, ornaments on the forehead, in the hair, and so on, any number to be worn at the same time.

Kundan Jewellery: A popularity of Rajasthan is work of Kundan, the jewellery in which Kundan is applied, is generally made from a heart of lac, a natural resin. Kundan jewellery is a mixture of gems and Meenakari on both side of a pattern with exciting colors.

Precious And Semi Precious Stones: Rajasthan has rich deposits of valuable and non-valuable stones such as topaz, agate, amethyst, emerald, lapiz lazuli and garnet, Each gem is supposed to have inbuilt powers and are used as lucky charms along Gold Jewellery: The most demanded metal in Indian jewellery also forms a significant part of jewellery in Rajasthan. Starting from 24 ct. to 18 ct., gold jewellery is available in all forms. Along with pure gold, one finds it studded with a variety of valuable and non valuable stones with their beauty as jewellery pieces.

Pratapgarh Jewellery: Pratapgarh has advanced its own way of enamel work which has given rise to new pattern of jewellery. Here the coating work is done with gold or silver using colored glass pieces as the base.

Lac Jewellery: Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur are very popular all over for Lacquered work. Lac bangles, toys and different articles are shoppers’ joy. Udaipur produces different objects such as tables, lamps and decorative articles in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

Meenakari Jewellery: Meenakari is famous for its gracefulness and its use of colors. Polishing work is done on both silver and gold ornaments and has grown under the support of kings, queens, seths and princes.

Textile Ornamentation: Besides all this jewelry, the saris and the lehengas (long skirts) of the ladies may be luxuriously and heavily embroidered with gold and silver threads. A single particle of gold could be drawn to a length of 500 feet.

Other Materials: Ivory was often used to make jewellery, especially bangles, which are considered as a necessary part of wedding jewelry. The bangles are often overlaid with gold. They are often painted in various colours, of the painted colours the most popular one is red. The construction of ivory bangles has now been stopped due to the ban on use of ivory and has been replaced by plastic or bone. Lac jewelry, usually bangles, are often worn in Rajasthan on all favorable occasions as a sign of good indication.
