Introduction of Leather Ware

Rajasthan Leatherwear
The leatherwears of Rajasthan are well-known for hundreds of years. The skins of dead animals is used by expert shoemakers for Jooties (foot-wear), chairs, musical instruments, mojaries, etc. The Jutis reveal the unique manner of each district they belong to. It is remarkable how the leather is crushed, tanned and painted and put to the best use. The leather is perforated and cut to generate structures that are adorned and embellished with woolen motifs. Cities like Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Barmer, are well-known for Jooties, musical instruments (like Tabla, Dhol, Dhapli), stringed instruments (Kamayacha) prepared from leather. Bikaner is famous for its painted Lampshades, shields, vases, Mojaries made out of camel skin. Chairs, belts, Hard Bag, hats, and foldable chairs with graphic decorations are from Tilonia.

The well-known leatherwear of Rajasthan includes footwear (especially Jutis/mojaries), musical instruments, etc. The skins of dead animals are used for the purpose. In Rajasthan the well-known places for leatherwear are Jaipur, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and many more.The leather work of Rajasthan is amusingly a joint effort of the local men and women. While the men do the tanning, cutting and stitching, the women do the fancy stitching and decoration.

The use of leather in Rajasthan is very old. The wonderfully designed leather shoes are famous items in the world market.Leather is decorated, perforated, Punched, and joined in various eye-catching patterns. Mojaries or Jooties are the most popular traditional leather wear in Rajasthan. in Jaipur and Jodhpur, The very well-known centres of traditional footwear are jaipur and Jodhpur where the most sophisticated work is found Jaipur and Jodhpur produces premium quality Jooties.Wonderful seats for horses are prepared in Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner’s special type of water bottle called ‘kopi’is made from camel hide.

The skins of dead animals have put to better use in Rajasthan, Example- jutties - the decorated footwear the people wear  or as saddles, bags and pouches. It is even used as backs for chairs after it has been ornamented with woolen patterns.

Designs include shiny work and finishing features, brass framing of machine – joined designs depending on the region in which the leather articles are created. A variety of leather made things like- sandals, saddles, leather shoes, water bags, fans, pouches, and even musical instruments.

By tradition Jaipur and Jodhpur are famous for their footwear. The popular Jutis come with gracefully embellished uppers. They are extremely powerful and long lasting and to some extent uncomfortable for the first few days, they fit like a glove after they are used for some time. Different types of jutties are available here in different shapes and styles and decorated with coloured thread.

Rajasthan is well-known for exclusive leather ware. Jooties (foot-wear), chairs, musical instruments, and mojaries are prepared from the skins of dead animals. Bikaner is famous for painted Lampshades, shields, vases, Mojaries made out of camel skin.

Rajasthan is home not only to the handicrafts of stone or the metal but its also equally well known for the prospering art in leather and other goods. So many attractive things are made from leather and its by products. Several fantastic articles which are created from leather are Mojaries or Jutis the most famous one. This product is a well-known footwear of Rajasthan and broadly popular for their ethnicity and distinctive patterns.

These are made by artisans mostly using vegetable tanned leather. The uppers are made of one piece of leather or textile decorated and ornamenting with cowries shells, ceramic beads brass nails, mirrors, and Bells. Mojari is a closed shoe with an extended bend footparts, while juttis have flat fronts. In juttis, back is normally covered but mojaries have an open look from behind.Mainly Produced in Jaipur and Jodhpur cities, these juttis are sure to enthrall you and provide that royal touch to your clothing.

Bapu Bazaar and Nehru Bazaar are well-known for its Mojri footwear. You will find all kinds, made up of camel leather, artistically designed and decorated.

Bapu Bazaar is located between the Sanganeri Gate and the New Gate whereas Nehru Bazaar is located on the western side of Bapu Bazaar.
