Kausani is a little less accessible
place, perched in a corner of Kumaon.
It is a peaceful hill
station, with plenty to
offer in terms of both
peace and amusement. In
the summers,
rhododendrons flower in
such profusion that they
practically carpet the
route. The main visiting
place in Kausani is the Katarmal Sun Temple.
This temple is known to the locals as Surya Mandir, and
is second only to Konark
temple. The complex of 44 temples is
about 800 years old. If you
ever visit the temple at dawn, you
will be able to witness the first rays of the sun streaming through a square
aperture in one of the smaller temples to pay homage to the presiding deity.
There are about 60 idols
in the temple and the oldest
idol is about 900 years old. |
