Introduction of Agra Fort

Agra Fort was built by Akbar who was the grandson of Babar. The construction of the fort was laid by him when he was only 23 years old in the year 1565. Agra fort is very magnificent and built in red sandstone. It is a proper example of the craftsmanship of the Mughal era. Agra Fort is one of the most prominent building after Taj.

The construction of the fort take about 8 years to complete at a total cost of  thirty five lakh of rupees under the superintendence of Qasim Khan Mir Barr-u-Bahr.

Agra fort is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River.
This fort is one of the many huge fortified dwellings that the emperor wanted to have at various points of his empire. This fort contains more than five hundred buildings.

Architecture of Agra Fort

Agra fort is in triangular shape, it covers a total area of about 1.5 miles. There are total four gates in the fort. From these gates, the only gate which is opened to the visitors is the Amar Singh Gate to the south. One of the largest private residency within the fort is the Jahangir Mahal. The ruins of the Akbari Mahal are at the south of Jahangir Mahal. At the left side of the throne room, Nagina Mosque is situated. Meena Bazaar is clearly seen from this mosque from where the ladies of the house view the merchants who exhibit their jewellery, brocades and silks in the courtyard below.

The trophies of Akbar's captures of a Rajput fortress in 1657 are exhibited at Chittor Gates. The Diwan- e-Khas, which was founded by Shah Jahan in 1637 is situated towards the riverside. Other buildings which are inside the fort are Sheesh Mahal, the Golden pavilions, the Khas Mahal, Anguri Bagh, the well-known Gates of Jami Masjid and Somnath.
