Introduction of Corbett

Corbett National Park - Wildlife Attractions in Corbett National Park
Corbett National Park was the India's first national park. Corbett National Park was established in 1936, as the Hailey National Park to protect the endangered Bengal tiger, it is the oldest national park in India. Corbett National Park is located in the foothills of the Himalayas. With the help of the WWF, Project Tiger was launched in Corbett National Park in 1973 and this park was one of the first such tiger reserves in the country. This park was named in honor of the late Jim Corbett. It is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand and was named after Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment, it contains 488 different species of plants and a diverse variety of fauna.Winter nights in Corbett Park are cold but the days are bright and sunny. Corbett has been a haunt for wildlife lovers and tourists for a long time.


Jim Corbett National Park

Corbett Tiger Reserve totally spreads over an area of 1318.54 square kms and includes apart from Corbett National Park additional areas of Sonanadi wildlife sanctuary and Reserve Forest buffer zone. Corbett National Park was earlier a popular hunting ground of the British. The topography in this park comprises of hilly and riverine areas, temporary marshy depressions, plateaus and ravines. Tourism activity is only allowed in selected areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve so that people get an opportunity to see its diverse wildlife and fabulous landscape. In recent years the number of people coming here has increased significantly. Every season more than 70,000 visitors come to the park from India and other countries. It rains from July to September.
 

Wildlife Attractions in the Corbett National Park

A total of about 580 species of birds, 110 species of trees, 50 species of mammals and 25 species of reptiles are found in this park. Major wildlife animals found in this park are Elephant, Jungle Cat, Wild Boar, Leopard Cat, Himalayan Black Bear, Rhesus Monkey, Tiger, Leopard, Deer, Blacknaped Hare, Himalayan Palm Civet, Sloth Bear, Wild Dog, Langur, Jackal, Indian Grey Mongoose, Porcupine and Common Otter. One can also spot the Crocodiles along the banks of the Ramganga River. In addition to various wildlife animals about 585 species of resident and migratory birds are also found here. Water fowl, Kite, Storkbilled Kingfisher, Bulbul, Brown fish owl, Peacock, Red jungle fowl, Minivets, Shrikes, woodpeckers, Cuckoos, parakeets and Barbets are also found within Corbett National Park.

Other attractions

Kalagarh Dam
Kalagarh Dam is dam which is situated in the south-west of the wildlife sanctuary. Plenty of migratory waterfowl comes here in the winters.This is one of the best places for a bird watching tour.

Jungle Safari in the Park
Jeep Safari is the most convenient way to travel within the national park. A guide will be there to accompany you during the safari in the park. You can view the animals at a very close distance from the watchtowers inside the park. Jeeps can be rented for park trips from Ramnagar.

Dhikuli
Dhikuli is a famous destination in the park, it is located at the fringes of Patli Dun valley. One can enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of the valley from Dhikala.

Corbett Falls
Corbett Falls is a 20 m water fall which is located about 25 km from Ramnagar and 4 km from Kaladhungi on the Kaladhungi–Ramnagar highway.

Treks
Tourists are not allowed to walk inside the park, they can only go trekking around the park in the company of a guide. If you are travelling in the winter season then you should make proper arrangements for their clothing as winter season is cold.

Best Time to Visit
Corbett National Park
The best time to visit Corbett National Park is from November to June. During the monsoon season from July to October this park remain closed. Some of the birds that migrate during the winter are the Steppe eagle and various water birds.

How to Reach Corbett National Park

By Rail:
Nearest railway station from Corbett National Park is Ramnagar which is 12 km from the Park.

By Road:
Corbett National Park is connected by road with Ramnagar, Lucknow, Nainital, Ranikhet and Delhi.

By Air:

The nearest domestic airport to Corbett National Park is located at Phoolbagh, Pantnagar at a distance of about 50 kms. The nearest international airport is located at Delhi, which is about 300 kms. The major air link for tourists coming from northern parts of India is at Dehradun and Lucknow.
