Hawa Mahal - Jaipur

Information of Hawa Mahal

Jaipur, the pink city of Rajasthan is enclosed by palaces and is famous for its windy palace "Hawa Mahal". Hawa Mahal also called "the palace of winds" is the signature building and it is one of the attractive monument in Jaipur.

Hawa Mahal is a mysterious palace which was founded in 1799 AD by Sawai Pratap Singh who was the grand son of Sawai Jai Singh and son of Sawai Madhoo Singh. Hawa Mahal was designed by Mr. Lal Chand Usta. Hawa Mahal is a perfect example of excellence of the architecture.

Architecture of Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is a five storey, pyramid-shaped building with beehive like structure. Hawa Mahal is constructed of Pink and Red Sandstone, it is a part of City Palace which is a very famous sight of Jaipur. The palace complex inside Hawa Mahal have a large number of windows which are overlooking the street below. There are about 953 small windows inside the palace, each having its own balcony. From these windows amazing views of Jaipur city can be viewed. Royal ladies use these windows in the ancient times to look at the city and the festivals and processions taking place in the bazaar and the nearby streets without being seen, as they were not allowed to go outside.

Each casement has small windows and arched roofs with hanging cornices which are elegantly modeled and shaped and the rooms inside are in different colours. Front wall of Hawa Mahal appear like screen instead of a palace. The top three stories of the building are just a single room thick but at the base there are two courtyards.

The palace complex of Hawa Mahal is carefully and magnificently carved and outlined with white pattern and borders. Unique decorations and carving work on the walls of the palace are evidence of the efforts, devotion and ability of the artists of that period.
