wonderful craftsmanship of the state. The most famous type of metal
craft is Theva. n Places like Pratapgarh this art is in practice since
a very long time. By making use of this technique the artisans have
shaped several objects as ornaments and for regular usage as well.
This type of metal craft is 400 years old. It received royal patronage
in ancient India. During the late 19th and early 20th century this
metal craft was believed to be a part of painting.
Being the land of the fighters protective covering were required in
large number. The metal craft in Rajasthan was thus put to use and
Long-lasting armors(protective covering) were formed for both the
soldiers and the kings. In addition to all these there were swords,
helmets, pole arms, spears, and a variety of other ancient weapons.
Apart from this various well-known traditions from battlefields,
hunting scenes and life are shown on the golden frames. Exhibiting a
disturbance of colors they show fighting Soldiers, Krishna with his
gopis, peacocks, royal weddings, Maharana Pratap riding his well-known
horse Chetek and hunting of elephants and other animals.
Theva require the usage of colored glass for the products.This was
one of the reasons why it was seen as a form of painting. Green, blue
and red, are the general colors that are used. The glass piece is then
enclosed with a gold plated silver case. A floral sketch or Historical
pattern is again positioned within this frame. A mixture of cinnamon
oil and ratti is used to stop the metal from melting. Apart from these
stylish art works the metal craft of Rajasthan was put in to use for
valuable services also.
