Introduction of Nagaur Fair

The festive environment during the Nagaur Fair of Rajasthan is spread throughout by the bellows of the cattle that are ornamented by their owners and the general sound that is linked with fairs such as these. All over the state of Rajasthan the Nagaur Fair is very famous and the special guests of honor at this fair are- Cattle! Nagaur Fair of Rajasthan has the unique distinction of being the second largest cattle fair in India.

Nagaur Fair of Rajasthan is one of the biggest eight days cattle fair in the country, held annually during the month of Magh, between late January and early February. Nagaur awakens with the gathering of cattle, horses and camels accompanied by their colourfully turbaned owners. Nagaur is a sea of animals, trading over 70,000 bullocks, horses and about 25,000 camels on display every year. The attractive town of Nagaur, one of the most scenic of Rajput townships, stirs to life during the Nagaur Fair of Rajasthan. Nagaur, a town in Rajasthan is situated in between Bikaner and Jodhpur of Rajasthan, and is chiefly significant for the rural charm and colorful life seen on the way.

In Nagaur Fair, owners of the animals from all over Rajasthan come and camp around the outskirts of Nagaur, in the fair they buy and sell animals.
 

Who Conducts Nagaur Fair

The fair is conducted by the Animal Husbandry Department and the Rajasthan Tourism Department also takes part in it. Animal Husbandry Department controls the trading of this huge cattle market where as many as 2,00,000 livestock are brought and sold by some 80,000 farmers coming from as far as Punjab, Haryana.
 

Who establish Nagaur Fair

Nagaur fair is established by the jodhpur Dynasty king Mr. Umed Singh in honour of Sh. Ramdeoji 56 years back and since then it has been held regularly. Nagaur fair or Ramdeoji Cattle fair is the second largest cattle fair in Rajasthan.
 

When Nagaur Fair is Held

The Nagaur Fair takes place in the month of January-February every year and lasts for four days starting on Magh Shukla Saptmi The Nagaur Fair takes place in attractive Rajput town - Nagaur, positioned between Jodhpur and Bikaner. Every year about 70,000 bullocks, camels and horses are bought and sold in this fair.The Jodhpur Nagaur Fair is the second largest fair in India.

History of Nagaur Fair in Rajasthan, India

In 1242 It was bestowed upon Balban as his jagir. Sher Shah occupy Nagaur in 1542 A.D. Nagaur was a sarkar of Ajmer subah during Sur Empire and later in Mughal Empire in India. Emperor Akbar construct the mosque here, and there is a holy place of the disciple of Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer.
 

Breed Bargains at the Nagaur Fair in Rajasthan, India

The fair of Rajasthan is well-known for trading in cows, bullocks, camels and horses. People from hundreds of miles away come here to buy and sell these. Serious bargaining is also there between owners and buyers, and abundance of fun and festivity is also there. The camels are very highly prized and their owners take particular care of them. The bullocks of Nagaur are famous for their fitness and draws attention of a large number of buyers. There are horse and camel races as well as dancing and singing. Animals are not only lavishly decorated, but also their owners exhibit wearing colourful turbans and long moustaches.
 

Shopping and Recreation at the Nagaur Fair in Rajasthan, India

The main attraction of the fair of Rajasthan is Mirchi Bazaar (Red Chilly Market), which is a wonderful place to shop for wooden items, leather accessories, local handicrafts, and ethnic jewelry. Even the hides of animals are sold to the customers after cutting them into different designs and shapes. 

A variety of games are conducted during this four-day festival of Rajasthan. Sports like, bullock races tug-of-war, cock fights and camel races; jugglers; puppeteers, story-tellers; and exciting campfire evenings takes place to entertain the tourists. As it nears evening, folk singers and artists come down on the spot to entertain the visitors and fascinate them with their lively performances. Bonfires and gaily-ornamented camps add more color and enthusiasm, which makes a visit to the Nagaur Fair an unforgettable experience.
 

Location and Transport of the Nagaur Fair in Rajasthan, India

Nagaur is situated 135 km from Jodhpur Airport and 85 km from Bikaner in Rajasthan, India. Jodhpur lies near the geographic center of Rajasthan state, which makes it a suitable base for travel in a region mostly visited by tourists.

Nagaur by Rail
The Nearest Railway station to Nagaur is at Merta Road (62 km) or Jodhpur Station is one more option. Jodhpur is on the Broad Gauge and hence linked to all the metro cities of India. There are daily trains from Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Jodhpur has two railway stations; City and Rai ka Bagh both are outside the walled city.

Nagaur by Road
Nagaur is 62 km away from Merta and 85 km from Bikaner. Merta is well linked by Road with all chief cities and Rajasthan Roadways run very comfortable deluxe & air conditioned buses from Delhi (Bikaner House, Nr. India Gate) to Jodhpur and Bikaner of Rajasthan. The roads are very good, and it takes around 8-9 hrs from Jodhpur of Rajasthan. You can also come by taxi. The bus stand is right outside the Rai ka Bagh Station.

The Nearest airport to Nagaur is at Jodhpur (135 km). Jodhpur is well linked to all the major cities which comprise Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Jaipur and Udaipur of Rajasthan.
