Information of Bundi |
Bundi is a
tiny and attractive town which is about 35 km from Kota and 210 kms
from Jaipur. Earlier Bundi was part of Kota and was ruled by the Hada
Chauhans - an offshoot of the well-known Chauhan clan who ruled Ajmer
and Delhi. It is one of the unexplored cities with a rich historical
wealth. It is famous for its forts, palaces and stepwells (baoris).
There are more than 50 stepwells in Bundi. These stepwells are used as
a source of water for the town.
Bundi is enclosed by the Aravali hills on three sides and covers an
area of 5628 square km. Bundi has tropical climate. Climate in winters
is around 5.0° Celsius and in summers it is around 43.0° Celsius.
Rajasthani, Marwari, English and Hindi are the common languages which
are spoken in Bundi. Best time to visit Bundi is from August to
February. |

History of Bundi |
The area
around Bundi was inhabited by various local tribes in ancient times.
Bundi and derive its name from a former Meena tribe man called Bunda
Meena. Previously Bundi was called “Bunda-Ka-Nal", Nal meaning
“narrow ways”. Afterwards the region was governed by Rao Deva Hada who
took over Bundi from Jaita Meena in 1342 and founded a princely state
Bundi by renaming the adjacent area called Hadotin which was the land
of great Hada Rajputs. |

Bundi is well-known for its elaborative murals and carvings.
Impressive medieval forts, havelis, temples with beautiful stone
idols, palaces, and chattris with carved pillars along with a scenic
lake in the heart of the town were the main landmarks of Bundi. The
main tourist attraction in Bundi is the Taragarh Fort,
The fort contains three tanks which never dry up, Sukh Mahal, Kshar
Bagh and Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri.

Bundi Palace
Bundi Palace is situated on the hillside nearby Taragarh Fort, it
is famous for its lavish traditional frescoes and murals.
Nawal Sagar
Nawal Sagar is a large square-shaped artificial lake in the centre
of Bundi which contains many small islets. A temple devoted to Varuna
the Vedic god of water stands half-submerged in the middle of the
lake.
Nagar Sagar twin step wells
Nagar Sagar twin step wells are identical step wells which are
crafted in perfect stonework on either side of the main spine of Bundi
town.
Dabhai Kund (Jail Kund)
Dabhai Kund is the largest of the kunds in Bundi. It is worth a visit
for the amazing carvings on the numerous steps leading down to the
water level.
Phool Sagar
Phool Sagar is another small palace, it was a summer palace. It is
still under the control of the royal family so prior permission from
the DM of the city is required to visit Phool Sagar.
Stepwells
32 stepwells in Bundi were used as a water supply (drinking and
washing). They were built by Mother Queen of Bundi in 1699 and were
donated for public welfare. The most beautiful stepwell is Rani Jiki
Barol which is an example of a Hindu and Jain architecture. It can be
visited.
Shikar Burj and Jait Sagar Shikar Burj
It is the name of the place that was used by kings for hunting
adjacent to a small lake called Jait Sagar. This lake was once
well-known for lotus flowers. There is a small garden near Jait sagar
called Terrace garden.

How to Reach Bundi |
By
Rail:
Bundi is connected to Kota, Neemach (MP), Delhi and Chittorgarh by
train. The best bet is to reach Kota by train and catch a bus/taxi to
Bundi which is only 35 km away.
By
Road:
Bundi is linked by road to some important cities of Rajasthan such as
Ajmer, Kota, Jaipur, etc as well as to Agra. Bundi is well connected
by NH 12 from Jaipur to Tonk, Bundi, Kota and Jabalpur.
By Air:
The nearest airport from Bundi is Jaipur which is about 210 km.
