About Bagdogra

Bagdogra is a small town in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India, which is enclosed by tea gardens. Bagdogra is located at 26.42°N 88.19°E. It is 17 km away from Siliguri which is the second largest city of West Bengal, India. Bagdogra is part of the Greater Siliguri Metropolitan Area. Bagdogra is linked by air from two major cities of India one is Delhi and other is Kolkata. Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri are the nearby railway station to Bagdogra. Bagdogra Airport is the only airport in North Bengal, which is now an International Airport. Bagdogra, a small and peaceful town which is situated in the northern part of West Bengal is a gateway to the well-known hill station, Darjeeling. The Teesta River flows near this town which adds to the beauty of the place. This place is located just a few kilometers short of the Himalayan range and has a low hilly landscape which provides it with a quiet and picturesque environment of its own. Lush green tea gardens, hilly terrain, verdant meadows and a beautiful township provide a scenic view to visitors here.

This town is well-known for its peaceful environment, tea plantations and various festivals organized on the banks of River Teesta. Scenic views of the eastern range of the Himalayas attract tourists from all over the world. River rafting, trekking, mountaineering and camping are some of the attractive activities you can indulge in while visiting Bagdogra. The place acts as a air connection for hill stations like Darjeeling and Kalimpong and hence, it receives a large number of visitors throughout the year. Bagdogra, being a hilly region, remains cool and breezy throughout the year. The best time to visit Bagdogra is during the months from May to October.

Bagdogra is a place which is bounded by nature and preserves a huge amount of culture and traditions within. Some festivals in Bagdogra are celebrated by the people that comprises Kenduli Mela, Jalpesh Mela, Gangasagar Mela, Naba Barsho and many more.

Naba Barsho: Naba Barsho is observed as the New Year according to the Tibetan calendar and is celebrated with huge enthusiasm. During this time, the tourists can observe the rich cultural and traditional heritage of this town, which is one of the main attractions of Bagdogra.

Summer Season in Bagdogra
Summers are comparatively less hot as the town is bounded by snow-covered mountains. The maximum temperature however does reach around 38°C. The months from March to May see the maximum number of people passing through here and heading to higher altitudes.

Winter Season in Bagdogra
Winter remains quite cold as the temperature falls to 5°C here because of the Himalayan range are nearby. November-February is the best time to visit and witness the refreshing mist in the air of Bagdogra.

Monsoon Season in Bagdogra
Monsoon is experienced early in this place and the temperature in monsoon falls down to 20°C. The best time to visit Bagdogra is from July to October and enjoy the freshness of the monsoon season.

Tourist Attractions in Bagdogra

Bagdogra is one of the most quiet and peaceful locations to spend some quality time with a loved one or an adventurous trip with a group of friends. Bagdogra has very limited tourist attractions however there are a few which have caught the eye of the traveller while visiting this heavenly place. There are quite a few places to see in Bagdogra that are also an integral part of Bagdogra tourist attractions.

The Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary

The Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary is a forest reserve which is situated in the middle of River Mahananda and River Teesta and is one of the famous tourist attraction of Bagdogra. Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary is about half an hour away from Bagdogra and offers the tourist a marvelous opportunity to sight the Indian Bison, the Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian elephants, the barking deer, Sambar and other birds and mammals.

Kali Mandir
The Kali Mandir is located about an hour away from Bagdogra near the Coronation Bridge. This temple contains the idol of Goddess Kali bejewelled, holding swords and other armoury. This temple also offers a amazing view of the Kanchenjunga peak with wonderful lush greenery all around.

Iskcon temple
Iskcon temple is one of the most famous pilgrim sights for all Hindu followers and it is situated about half an hour away from Bagdogra. This temple also houses statues of Lord Narsimha ,Advait Acharya and others and is a popular tourist attraction in Bagdogra.Iskcon temple is built around the story of Radha-Krishna.

Coronation Bridge
Coronation Bridge is one the oldest monuments of Bagdogra as it was built in 1930. The Coronation Bridge was named so as it was built to honour the coronation of King George V. From here the tourist can view the amalgamation of two important rivers of North Bengal- River Teesta and River Rangeet.

Salugara Monastery Near Bagdogra
Bagdogra Salugara Monastery in Bagdogra town is among those places which are famous for their monasteries and monks. According to an ancient belief, the monastery is surrounded by hills which protect it. Thousands of people visit this place to witness the beautiful relics and idols of the monastery.Salugara Monastery is located about 13 km away from Bagdogra and is famous for stupas of Buddha. This monastery was built by Buddhist monks who are the followers of His Holiness- The Dalai Lama. The most prominent attraction of this monastery is the Stupa which is 110 feet tall and was founded by the Tibetan Lama, Kalu Rinpoche.

Other places to visit in Bagdogra are the Science City in Siliguri, Umrao Singh Boat club in Sukhna,  white water rafting in the River Teesta, etc.

How to Reach Bagdogra

By Rail
The nearest railhead to this town is Jalpaiguri station which is the main railway junction and is linked to the main cities of India via rail. Frequent trains are available from major cities of India to Jalpaiguri railway station, from where tourists can take a bus or taxi to reach Bagdogra.

By Road
Regular bus services are available from various cities of the North-East India and the Northern region of West Bengal to reach this town. Bagdogra is connected to all the major cities via national highway.

By Air
Bagdogra Airport is fully functional for domestic as well as international flights. Visitors can conveniently take flights to reach here from some of the main cities of India such as Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Paro and Bangkok are linked directly via air to Bagdogra. Tourists can hire a taxi or bus shuttle from the airport to reach the town of Bagdogra.
