About Sahastradhara-Dehradun

Sahastradhara meaning “thousand fold spring” is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Uttrakhand state and is located in Dehradun, India . It lies on 30.387231 latitude and 78.131606 longitude. The place has an ecstatic beauty of nature where water drips from limestone stalactites, making the water sulphur abundant and thus the place is also called as sulphur springs. It is sulphur water spring of relatively lower temperature than its surroundings. It is a warehouse of excellent beauty of caves, waterfalls and steppe farming by local people. Its extreme wonderful essence of nature thrive people from far away places. It surely revitalizes the soul and mind. Sahastradhara is at about 11 km from the city of Dehradun. All the transport facility such as buses, taxi, autos or cabs are available to get to the Sahastradhara.

 
History of Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara is located at a distance of 14 km from the centre of the city is Sahastradhara, a striking picnic spot and a popular tourist attraction of Dehradun. With its literal meaning being 'Thousand Fold Spring', Sahastradhara is a beautiful sulphur spring, having a fall of about 9 meters.

Owing to the presence of sulphur, the water of this spring is believed to have therapeutic value and is said to rectify the worst skin diseases. People from all over India and abroad visit this place to find the heal of a variety of skin ailments. Also one can drink the sulphur water on account of its other remarkable medicinal properties which can cure a large number of stomach diseases too.

Besides medicinal merits and curative powers, this natural spring is also famous for its beautiful views where one can spend hours in the calmness of nature. The aesthetic beauty of this spring is further enhanced by the surrounding caves and Baldi River. Due to its medicinal properties and thrilling views that attracts people from far away, Sahastradhara is popular among a large number of tourists. The place refreshes one’s mind and some people also come here just to take a dip and laze around in the splendour of nature.

 
Location of Sahasratra Dhara

Sahasratra Dhara, the ‘thousand fold spring’ is situated at a distance of 11 kms from Dehra Dun. The place makes an ideal picnic spot and is of huge attraction to visitors. The view of Baldi river and the caves are really wonderful.

The water here has a fall of about 9 metres. Particles thus accumulating over the centuries have formed a projecting ledge, and a sort of cave, from the roof of which falls a shower.

A truly amazing fact: Sulphur Water Spring in Sahastradhara Dehradun:
There is also a sulphur spring in which visitors often take bath. Its water is said to cure skin diseases and possess other medicinal properties. Also one can drink the sulphur water which can cure a large number of stomach diseases.

Tourist Attractions in Sahasratra Dhara

Shiva Temple
A very old Shiva temple along with guru Dronacharya cave is present in this location, providing a good mythological scenario and an essence of historical importance to the place. People visit and worship here.

Joyland
This place is also housing a manmade water amusement park to attract the tourist from various places. Swings and water slides in the Joyland Water Park adds the fun and making this a very popular picnic spot. To add on the fun with kids & family & friends one can find the exotic swings and water slides in the Joyland in Sahastradhara. The children would really enjoy the slides down to the pool, the merry go round, the disco dance swing, the columbus ride and many more!!

Ropeway
A ropeway is provided to reach the hill top in Sahastradhara to find a park and a temple. The view is pleasant from the hill top.

Best time to visit Sahasratra Dhara

The site can be visited throughout the year, however, the best time to visit Sahastradhara is during rainy season from May to August, when the river flow is good enough and the lakes are all full. The sheer sight of the gurgling waters fills one’s soul with a reviving energy.

Mythological Fact about Sahastradhara

An age old temple and Drona cave-named after the Guru Dronacharya of Mahabharata period- is present here in Sahastradhara which acts as image of prayer and worship far across India.

Restaurants and Hotel

This place has many hotels for stay and restaurants for the food. Having food besides the nature adds up the pleasantries and keeps one fresh and healthy.

The nearby villages increase the beauty as they thrive on steppe farming. The hills cut in the form of steps are marvellous to watch and is simply a visual delight. The main season is summer and October to March in winter, during which the water has its natural flow.

There are some budgeted hotels but the best hotel is the GMVN Tourist Bungalow Sahastradhara which is the government undertaking with the full facilities and available in the cheapest rates.

How to reach to Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara is located about 11 kms from clock tower Dehradun and around 6 kms from the Rajpur road via the mussoorie by pass road. A number of transport means are available to get to Sahastradhara such as local buses, taxi, auto or cabs.
