Introduction of Karauli |
Karauli is a beautiful and scenic old fortified town which is located
at a distance of 178 kms from Jaipur in the North Indian state of
Rajasthan. The town of Karauli was built by Raja Arjun Pal in 1346 AD.
In the beginning, the town was known as Kalyanpuri, which was named
after the local deity Kalyanji. The fortified city of Karauli is
enclosed by the walls of Red sandstone with towers for security.
Presently, these fortifications are in ruins, yet it boast of eleven
posterns and six gates. Karauli is famous for the shrine of Madan
Mohanji. Karauli is also known for the fair which take place at Kaila
Devi temple every year. Languages which are generally spoken in
Karauli are Rajasthani, Marwari and Hindi.

History of

Karauli was built by Raja Arjun Pal in 1346 AD. At that time Karauli
was the capital of a small state of similar name. Myth associated with
the town of Karauli is that the ruling family were successors of Lord
Krishna, one of the most respected god of Hindu mythology. The town of
Karauli is located in a position naturally defended by narrow valleys
on the north and east, while it is further protected by a huge wall. As such
they occupy the highest rank among the Yaduvanshi Rajputs and their
family history is rich with legends of wonder and bravery. Previously
Karauli together with Alwar was the part of Matsya kingdom as per the
legend of Mahabharata, The Chandravanshi Jadaun Rajputs successors of
predecessor Mathura Kingdom, founded by Raja Brahm Pal in 900 AD. His
Highness the Maharaja retains a military force of 281 cavalry, 56
guns, 1640 infantry and is permitted to a salute of 17 guns (as of
1892) occupied it, and they ruled up to 1947. The Maharaja's palace is
a segments of buildings, some of them dates to the late 18th century.
Karauli was dominated by Jadaun Rajputs.

Kaila
Devi Temple
The Shrine
of Kaila Devi is situated nearby the town of Karauli on the edges of
the Kalisil river in the district of Karauli. Kaila Devi Shrine is
devoted to goddess Kaila, of the former princely rulers of the state
of Karauli. It is made up of marble with a huge courtyard of a
checkered floor. At one part of the temple there are a large number of
red flags which are planted by followers. The place is also well-known
for its fair which takes place during the dark half of 'chaitra' in
the month of March-April and lasts for a fortnight.
Bhanwar
Vilas Palace
Karauli is
also famous for Bhanwar Vilas Palace which is the dwelling of the
Royal family. Bhanwar Vilas Palace was built in 1938 by Maharaja
Ganesh Palr as a royal residence.
Bhanwar
Vilas Palace still belongs to the heirs of the Royal family. However,
the Palace has been changed into a Hotel to serve the tourists.
Timangarh

Timangarh
Fort is a well-known historical fort nearby Karauli. Timangarh
Fort was founded in 1100 AD and damaged in one of the attack
thereafter. The fort was modernized by King Timanpal of Bayana in 1244
AD. The fort
is well-known for collection of stone idols carvings and ancient
ashtadhatu (eight metals). Art work done on the walls of the temple is
very amazing.
The structural design of the fort is very imposing and the interiors
are decorated with beautiful furniture. This fort is one of the most
prominent attractions of Karauli. This fort was used as a
residence of regal family till the year 1950.
City Palace, Karauli
City Palace
of Karauli is more than 500 years old, it was founded by the royal
family in the 14th century and a wonderful city palace in 1635 AD.
Until 1938 AD, city palace continue to be the official dwelling of the
royal family of Karauli. The city
palace of Karauli is the 18th century building which has beautiful
architecture, attractive jail work, glass inlay work, stone
carvings, classic paintings with amazing wall paintings and stucco
work.

Festivals
of Karauli |
Every year in the town of Karauli, one animal fair and two sacred
fairs are celebrated. The spiritual fairs takes place at the shrine of
Kaila Devi in the month of March - April and Sept - Oct. Animal
fair takes place annually for a week in the month of February at
Karauli which corresponds with the festival of Shivratri. This fair is
one of the oldest animal fairs of Rajasthan where every year different
types of animals are brought for sale/purchase. Here one
can view the trading of animals, the camping of animal proprietors,
shops selling colourful and beautiful items for use and ornamentation
of the animals. At the end
of the fair, various competitions are organised to judge the best
specimens. Then the animal fair is changed into a commodity fair where
handicrafts items, spices and day to day usage goods of all kinds are
traded.

Reach Karauli:

By Rail
From Karauli the adjacent railway stations are at Gangapur City, about
32 kms and Hindaun, about 29 kms, both are situated on the main
Delhi-Mumbai Broad gauge Line, where almost all the trains runs
between Mumbai and Delhi Stop.
By Road
Karauli is well connected by road. It is about 65 kms from the famous
Jaipur-Agra Highway.
By Air
From Karauli the adjacent airports are Jaipur and Agra which are at a
distance of about 180 kms from Karauli. |
