Pushkar
Eleven
kilometres (7
miles) to the north-west of Ajmer is Lake Pushkar, one of
the holiest of Hindu places of pilgrimage. The lake is
believed to be of miraculous origin. According to the Padma
Puranas, Brahma, the Creator and the first god of the Hindu
Trinity, was in search of a place where he could perform a
yagna undisturbed. While passing through the place now known
as Pushkar, the lotus flowers in his hand slipped and fell
in three places from where water began to issue forth. These
three places came to be known as the Big Pushkar, the Middle
Pushkar and the Small Pushkar. Brahma chose the first as the
place most suitable for the performance of the yagna and
called it Pushkar after the lotus.
References to Pushkar are found in
the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and it is believed that the
Pandavas spent a few years of their exile in the hills
around Pushkar. The caves in the hills are associated with
some of the ancient sages.
Every year, a big fair is held at
Pushkar on Kartik Purnima (October/November).
There are many temples at Pushkar,
but the
temple of
Brahma is the most prominent. It is one of the rare temples
dedicated to Brahma. A temple of Savitri, the consort of
Brahma, is on the top of a steep hill on the western side of
the lake. The temple of Sri Vaikunthanathji, also known as
Rangji, is another noteworthy shrine in the typical South
Indian style of architecture. |
