Bardan Monastery
About Bardan Monastery

Bardan Monastery or Bardan Gompa is a 17th-century Buddhist monastery which is approximately 12 kilometres south of Padum, in Zanskar, Ladakh, northern India. It belongs to the Dugpa-Kargyud monastic order and was one of the first monasteries of this section to be established in Zanskar.The monastery also ran several smaller hermitages in the area. It is a branch of Stakna Gompa. About 45 monks live here. The monks of Bardan Monastery participate in the presentation of the idol in Sani Monastery. During this festival they perform the masked dances, as a part of the ritual.

Bardan Gompa consists of a large Dukhang, assembly hall. All the other structures within the monastery are structured around the Dukhang only. The hall boasts of some of the most magnificent statues of Buddhist figures , along with some small stupas in wood , copper ,clay,and bronze and also a shrine, devoted to Maitreya. A number of smaller monasteries in the region come under the management of Bardan monastery one such monastery is Sani Gompa.

Bardan Monastery of Ladakh, stands at the top of a rocky crag. It lies at a distance of about 12 km to the south of Padum. A number of smaller monasteries in the region come under the management of Bardan. One such monastery is the Sani Gompa. The other monastery lies very close to Bardan Monastery is Muney that is famous for its splendid architectural treasures.
