Kerala, the god's own country is situated on the southwestern tip of India. Thiruvananthapuram or commonly known as Trivandrum is the cosmopolitan and capital city of Kerala. Kerala is surrounded by the Arabian Sea in the west, the Western Ghats in the east and is networked by forty four rivers. Kerala is one of the most famous tourist destination in Asia. Kerala offers everything to the tourists which ranges from an equable climate, serene beaches, backwaters, hill stations, exotic wildlife sanctuaries, waterfalls, plantations, paddy fields, Ayurveda packages, art, culture, music, dance, festivals, historical monuments, exotic cuisine and houseboat cruise.

Today, Kerala is the India's most advanced state with the highest literacy rate. Kerala is also the most cleanest and peaceful state in India. For administrative purposes, the State of Kerala is divided into fourteen districts. Malayalam and English are the most common languages which are widely spoken in Kerala. Hinduism, Christianity and Islam religions are found in Kerala. The climate of Kerala is pleasant for most of the part of year. In summers, the temperature is about 24 to 30 degree Celsius and in winters it is about 22 to 32 degree Celsius.

History of Kerala

The history of Kerala is very distinct. According to the legend, the Lord Vishnu descended from the heavens in his incarnation of Parashuram. After slaying the evil kings 21 times over to repeal their force from earth, he did penance for waging the terrible war, and threw his axe into the sea. The area where the axe landed, from shaft to blade, Kerala rose from the sea. The Phoenicians started the sea trade, and in 1000 BC Kerala was visited by King Solomon's ships that travelled to `Ophir', the modern Puvar, south of Trivandrum. Kerala was visited by the rulers from the other countries like Greece, Rome, Arabia, China. The Portuguese were forced out of the area. In 1795, the Dutch too had to move out, and the British traders had become the strongest power in India by that time. In all this period of prosperity and strife, the region's identity existed as the Malabar Coast and Cochin Travancore. It was only in 1956 that it gained recognition as an independent state, Kerala.

Geography of Kerala

Kerala is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west, Karnataka in the north and northeast, and Tamil Nadu and Western Ghats in the east. Geographically, Kerala is a part of the coastal belt and the Western Ghats runs along the Kerala. The rain bearing clouds of the south-west monsoon brings heavy rainfall to Kerala from May to September. The location of Kerala gives it a unique climatic and geographic features. Kerala is networked by forty four rivers. Due to these unique geographical features, Kerala is one of the most famous tourist destination in Asia. The coastal belt of Kerala is lined with sandy and sunny beaches, palm lined shores and serene backwaters. The hill ranges of Kerala have hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, tea estates and spice plantations.

People of Kerala

The majority of the people in Kerala are Dravidians. The main religion in Kerala is Hinduism with considerable percentage of Muslims and Christians. Christianity has a long history in this state, as it is believed that the first missionary from Europe landed on the coast of Kerala in the first millennium. There is highest literacy rate in Kerala which has resulted in high health care and health awareness among the people. The women in the state enjoys high social status in the society. Higher education and equal opportunities have further strengthened the women's status in the society.

Festivals of Kerala

Kerala is a land of festivals where various festivals are celebrated round the year. These festivals are an essential part of the state and observed with great enthusiasm and fun in which the people of all caste and religion participate. Today, these festivals are perhaps the only occasion when the classical, folk and ritual arts of the Kerala come alive and as well as represents the true tradition and culture. During the festivals, the people clean and decorate their houses, enjoy get together with friends and relatives, exchange gifts, take part in rituals, processions and offer prayers. The cuisine of Kerala is very rich and the culinary skills of the various communities in Kerala have given very large varieties to it. While Hindus are specialist in delicious vegetarian food, the Muslims and Christians are famous in the non-vegetarian food like Pathiri and Kozhi curry (chicken), biriyanom fish dishes like meen pollichathu, fish moee. Coconut and spices are added to every dish in Kerala. Sadya, the typical Kerala feast is served on a banana leaf. It consists of rice

and more than fourteen vegetable dishes like sambar, rasam, olan, kaalan, pachadi, kichadi, aviyal, thoran, pickle, pappad, banana chips and payasam, the deliciously sweet dessert cooked in milk. A typical Kerala breakfast may comprises of Puttu, the rice powder and grated coconut steam cooked together, idli, sambar and dosa with chutney, idiappam (string hoppers) or appam, a king of pancake made of rice edged with a crisp lacy frill. Toddy, which is tapped from coconut trees is a favourite drink among the rural men, local people and tourists. 'Kappa' (Tapioca) and fish curry served with toddy make a unique combination. Tender coconut water, the world’s safest natural soft drink, is a refreshing and nutritious drink. The crunchy pappadam, kozhalappam, achappam, cheeda, churuttu, banana and jack fruit chips can be eaten at any time.

The tradition of classical arts in Kerala dates back over a thousand years. Some of the classical arts in Kerala are Kathakali, Chakyarkoothu, Koodiyattam, Mohiniyattam, Krishnanattam, Patakam and Thullal. Koodiyattam, a dance-drama associated with temple rituals is one of the oldest classical arts of Kerala. Shopping in Kerala

The bell metal, wood, cane, fiber and coconut shell craft are the popular crafts of Kerala. Kathakali models of wood, painted in vibrant colours, rosewood elephants, miniature models of snake boats, baskets, trays and furniture made of cane, coconut shell cups, vases and spoons can be bought from Kerala. Necklaces and bead curtains made out of sea shells, bell metal lamps and sculptures, exquisitely crafted jewellery boxes, incense burners, betel boxes, nut crackers, screwpine articles, lacquerware, terracotta, wooden toys and dolls and intricate gold jewellery are appreciated by the women in India. The Aramula kannadi, the unique metal mirror craft of Kerala is famous all over the world.

Backwaters in Kerala

It is an intricate network of various lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries and the deltas of forty-four rivers in Kerala that drain into the Arabian Sea. Over 900 km of this vast water world is navigable. The largest backwater stretch in Kerala is the Vembanad Lake which flows through three districts and opens out into the sea at the Kochi port. The Ashtamudi Lake, which literally means having eight arms covers a major portion of Kollam district in the south, is considered as the gateway to the backwaters.

The Houseboats in Kerala are popularly known as Kettuvalloms. These are the giant country crafts, which measure upto 80 feet in length. These houseboats were built by binding huge planks of jack wood together, without the use of a single nail. Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala

There are about 12 wildlife sanctuaries and 2 national parks in Kerala. These sanctuaries are situated in the lush forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala. These wildlife sanctuaries are the home to various rare animals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants. The wildlife animals varies from the endangered Nilgir Tahr to the lion tailed macaque, and from the Atlas Moth to the Travancore Evening Brown. The famous wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala are Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve, Eravikulam National Park and Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve is one of the largest and finest wildlife reserves in India.

During your visit to Kerala please consider following facts and timings of the below given destinations:

1.Cochin
The Jewish synagogue in Cochin is open every day except Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Timings:  10 am to 12 noon; afternoon - 3 pm to 5 pm.
 
Dutch Palace : This palace is open from 10 am to 5 pm (Closed on Fridays)
 

2.Art Forms
Kathakali show and Cultural show are not the same. The cultural show is more of a kaleidoscope where they will show different art forms like Kathakali, Mohniyattam, Kalaripayattu etc There is a difference is the charge for both the shows.  Kathakali show is cheapker &  Cultural show – Rs.450 per head
 
3. Museum Visit
Folklore museum holds a varied n valuable collection of Kerala existent and extinct art forms. it will give u a great insight into the Keralan art, culture and architecture all under one roof
 
4. Cochin Sightseeing
Normally if you are arriving in the afternoon, you do not get any time to do the sightseeing on the same day. whereas if you are staying at Cochin for 2 Nights you can conveniently do the sightseeing on the second day.
 

5. Cherai
If we are providing accommodation at Cherai, it is always advisable to do the Sightseeeing of Cochin first  before proceeding to Cherai as Beach Hotels are quite far from the Cochin old city.
 
6. Suggestions for activities
For those travelers staying at Cochin for 2 nights, we can offer them visit to Chendamangalam where they could see the Paliyam palace, Synagogue etc. We can offer the guest a program called “ tea with local family “ which includes cookery show We can also offer Cycle Tour in Cochin , short tours for guest staying in Cochin covering the villages Long tours on Cycles with back up teams can also be provided in Kerala which is becoming very popular here. Sunset cruise / Harbour cruise in Cochin is an interesting tour for the guest.
 
7. House Boat
There are 1 bedroom boat or 2 bedroom boat instead of mentioning. House Boats are provided on full board basis. Regarding the Air Condition Facility, the guests must note that  Ac will be available only in the bedroom and it will function only from 9PM to 7AM  except for Premium (luxury)  Boats where the Ac can be switched on at any time on request.  

8. Country boat ride
Considering the safety of the clients, we strongly suggest that we use 1 Country Boat for Max 4 people and above that we should provide additional boats
 
9. Thekkady
There is no back water cruise in Thekkady, the boat rides are called Game Viewing Boat ride or Periyar Boating ( timing 7.30am, 9.30am, 11.30am and 3.30pm).
If the traveller
have only 1 night at Thekkady, we do not offer all the programs like Elephant Prog, Plantation visit, Jungle walk and boating. It is advisable only if the travelers have atleast 2 nights.
 
10. Madurai
The Rickshaw ride and sight seeing , we do not provide Auto Rickshaws ride but we use Cycle Rickshaws Auto Rickshaw ride, if interested can be offered at Cochin During the City Tour in Madurai , the guide will take the guest to the Temple and will explain all the ritual and ceremony but no guide service will be provided during the closing ceremony, if required can arrange the same on extra cost. 
 
11. Coonoor / Ooty
There are only limited seats available in the toy train. The train can be booked 3 months before the date o travel. Suggest that you send us the details as soon you want us the booking to be confirmed so that we can reserve the tickets else most of the time we are getting the waitlist tickets and we get the same done by paying extra money.
 

We offer a Tea tasting program at Coonoor, Participants get an insight into how the tea leaf evolves from the plant stage right through to how it is manufactured in the factory. Participants also get to taste exclusive and rare teas such as the Silver Tips and Handmade teas amongst others and get to learn about the subtleties and differences in each tea during the tea appreciation tour. We can offer this program with lunch and without lunch ( Prior booking necessary )
 
12.   Documents
Please send the documents as soon as you confirm the booking with us. Sometime the vehicles are not sent from cochin and in this scenario, we sent the documents to our person in Chennai and due to lack of time, we have to depend of flight couriers which are very expensive. We would appreciate if you could send the documents at least 02 weeks before the arrival date.
