Introduction:

Bengali or Bangla is an Indigenous language of the eastern South Asia region known as Bengal. At present, this region includes Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. Bengali declared national and official language of Bangladesh and is one of the 23 national languages acknowledged by the Republic of India. In India, it is the official language of the state of West Bengal and the co-official language of the state of Tripura, Cachar District of southern Assam and the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Bengali was also made an official language of Sierra Leone with the purpose to pay tribute to the Bangladeshi peacekeeping force from the United Nations stationed there. Bengali with 200 million speakers is the fifth most widely spoken language of the world, after Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, and Hindustani (Hindi-Urdu). In India alone, there are 70 milllion Bengali speakers, who made it the second most commonly spoken language in the country. Outside Bangladesh and India, Bengali is also spoken in Nepal, Singapore, Malawi, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Across all countries where Bengali is spoken, an additional 5 million people speak it as a second language.

Bengali Language:

Bengali is an Indo-European language that belongs to the Bengali-Assamese group of Eastern Zone languages within the Indo-Aryan subfamily, hence, it is closely related to Assamese and Oriya. The main dialects of Bengali are; Central or Standard Bengali, Western Bengali (Kharia Thar, Mal Paharia, Saraki), Southwestern Bengali, Northern Bengali (Koch, Siripuria), Rajbangsi, Bahe, Eastern Bengali, Haijong, Southeastern Bengali (Chakma), Ganda, Vanga, Chittagonian.

Historically it has evolved from the Magadhi Prakrit, Pāli and Sanskrit languages, but it has developed its own writing script, known as Bangla or as Kutila-lipi or ‘crooked script’. Though it highly resembles the Devanagari script of Hindi, Sanskrit, and other related Indic languages, it does not follow the grammatical rules of these languages. It has freed itself from grammatical gender and fixed stress on the initial syllable of a word or phrase.

The Bengali script consists of 12 vowel graphemes and 52 consonant graphemes and is written left to right. Bengali is also a source for some other related languages in the region, like Assamese and Meithei that use the Bengali script with minor modifications. The national anthems of both India and Bangladesh were written in Bengali by renowned scholar Rabindranath Tagore.
