Kerala
offers one of the longest stretches of beaches in the
country. Kerala shares its western border with the
Arabian Sea and has a 600 km long shoreline. This
shoreline is dotted with some of the finest and charming
sandy beaches, rocky formations, natural harbors,
lagoons and coconut palms. Most of the India's finest
beaches are located in Kerala. Each and every year, the
large number of visitors visit Kerala due to these
beaches. The world famous Kovalam beach and the historic
Bekal beach is found only in Kerala.

Kovalam Beach
Kovalam Beach
is the internationally renowned beach in Kerala. This beach is
located about 16 kms from Trivandrum and has been a favorite
tourist place since 1930. Kovalam consists of three adjacent
crescent shaped and palm fringed beaches. The southernmost
beach is known as the Lighthouse beach and is the most popular
beach. The Lighthouse beach and Hawah beach are separated from
less populated beaches north and south by rocky highlands. The
town proper is at Kovalam Junction, about 1.5 kms. from the
beaches. Accommodation of every type and to suit every type of
budget is available here. The beaches are visited for
sunbathing, water sports, shopping, catamaran cruising, yoga,
meditation and rejuvenative Ayurvedic body toning massages. |

Samudra
Beach
Samudra Beach is situated about 4 kms. north of Kovalam
Beach. This beach is more peaceful, steep and rough and not as
good for swimming.
Pulinkudi and Chowara Beach
Pulinkudi and Chowara Beach are two famous beaches about 8 kms.
south of Kovalam. These two beaches are very peaceful and
quiet and luxury alternatives to Kovalam's crowded beaches.
Thangasseri Beach
The Thangasseri beach is situated about 5 kms from the town of
Kollam. This seaside village is historically important and has
the ruins of an old Portuguese fort and various churches built
in the 18th century.
Varkala Beach
Varakala beach is located about 41 kms. from the city of
Thiruvananthapuram. This is a famous seaside resort and spa,
as well as an important Hindu pilgrimage center. High cliffs
with rich mineral springs rise majestically from the
coastline. The two major attractions of this beach are the
2000 year old Sree Janjardhana Swamy Temple and the Nature
Care Centre.
Shanghumukham Beach
The Shanghumukham Beach is located about 16 kms from
Trivandrum. This beach is a favourite place for the sunset
viewers. The main attractions of this beach are an indoor
recreation club, the Matsya Kanyaka (a gigantic, 35 m long
sculpture of a mermaid) and a restaurant shaped like a
starfish. |

Alappuzha Beach
Alappuzha Beach is one of the most popular picnic spots
in Alappuzha. The pier, which extends into the sea here,
is about 140 years old.
Cherai Beach
The Cherai beach is located in Cochin and border the
Vypeen island. This beach is located about 45 kms from
the Ernakulam. This beach is ideal for swimming.
Dolphins can be seen occasionally at this beach. A
typical Kerala village with paddy fields and coconut
groves nearby is an added attraction of this beach. |

Thirumullavaram Beach
The Thirumullavaram Beach is situated about 6 kms. from Kollam.
This secluded beach is a beautiful picnic centre and has
frequent bus connections to the town.
Kappad Beach
Kappad Beach is situated about 16 kms. from kozhikode. This is
the historic beach where Vasco da Gama landed on the 27th May,
1498 with 170 men in three vessels. The rock studded beach is
locally known as Kappakadavu. An interesting feature of the
landscape is the sprawling rock that protrudes into the sea.
The temple on the rock is believed to be 800 years old.
Muzhappilangad Beach
Muzhappilangad Beach is situated about 15 kms. from Kannur.
Muzhapilangad Beach is situated on the Thalassery – Kannur
route and is one of the longest and cleanest beaches in the
state. The black rocks protect this log, clean beach from the
currents of the deep, making its shallow waters a swimmer's
paradise. This is perhaps Kerala's only drive-in beach where
you can drive down the entire length of 4 km. |

Payyambalam Beach
The Payyambalam beach is situated about 2 km from Kannur. This
beach is famous for its flats laterite cliffs that jut into
the sea. This long, secluded beach is a local picnic spot. The
well laid out gardens and the massive landscaped sculpture of
Mother and Child make it extremely captivating.
Padinharekara Beach
The Padinharekara Beach is situated at the end of the Tipu
Sultan Road near Ponnani in Malappuram. This beach offers a
breathtaking view of the confluence of the Bharathapuzha, the
Tirur Puzha and Arabian Sea. |

Vallikunnu Beach
The main attraction in the Vallikunnu Beach is the beach
resort set in the middle of the coconut grove. The
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is just a short distance away.
Ezhimala Beach
The Ezhimala Beach is a small beautiful beach, situated
about 53 kms. from Kannur. This beautiful beach has a |

hillock nearby (about 286 m in height). Carved stone pillars
and an ancient burial chamber can be seen at the foot of the
hills. The hills are mainly known for the rare medicinal
herbs. A Naval Academy is also being developed here.

Kappil Beach
Kappil Beach is the remote and secluded beach, about 6 kms.
from Bekal Fort. This beach is fast becoming a major tourist
attraction. The Kodi cliff nearby offers a panoramic view of
the Arabian Sea.
Pallikere Beach
The Pallikere Beach is situated about 1 kms. from Bekal fort.
This enchanting beach offers a spectacular view of the fort
and has ample facilities for recreation and relaxation.
Kanwatheertha Beach
Kanwatheertha Beach is situated about 3 kms. from Manjeswaram.
A large swimming pool like formation of the sea on the vast
beach is the main attraction. |
