Covelong Beach |
Covelong (Kovalam) is a fishing village in India, Covelong is
about 40 kilometres south of Chennai, on the East Coast Road
en route to Mahabalipuram. Covelong Beach is one of the
attractive beaches around Chennai , it is located on the coast
of Coromandel. Covelong was a port town which was developed by
the Nawab of Carnatic, Saadat Ali.
Covelong is located at a distance of 40 km from Chennai, it is
the chief beehive of fishing activity. This location was once
a port of Nawabs of the Carnatic, which was set up by Saadat
Ali. Over the years, the beach has become one of the perfect
excursion locations around Tamil Nadu. Covelong beach is one
of the few places in the East Coast where wind surfing takes
place.
The Dutch built a fort in Covelong during the colonial times,
which today has been made the Taj Fisherman's Cove, a private
luxury beach resort. A perfect retreat in the midst of

Crocodile Farm, which is a vast place for reptiles breeding.
Here one can closely observe crocodiles living in their homely

History of Covelong Beach |
Covelong is a wonderful beach between Chennai and Mahabalipuram
about 40 kms from chennai on the East Coast Road and a small
fascinating fishing settlement. Initially it was a port which
was founded by Saadat Ali, Nawab of Carnatic and it was here
that the French General Laboudonnais landed his troops in 1746.
Then it was taken by Clive in 1752 and destroyed. The beach is
separated from the mainland bythe canal running from Chennai to
Mahabalipuram.
The beautiful village of Covelong is renowned for its fishing
activities. In the fishing village the swaying palms and the
striking beach attract people from across the globe. The
environs, tranquility,ambience, peace, and the infrastructure at

By Rail
The nearest convenient railway station is situated at
Chennai.
By Road
The beach is located at a distance of 60-km from
Chennai and 20-km from Mahabalipuram. It is an hour's
drive from Chennai. There are regular buses from
Mahabalipuram and Chennai to reach the beach. Tourists can
also hire a taxi from Chennai or Mahabalipuram.
By Air
The nearest airport is at Chennai which is about 60-km
away from Covelong.
Apart from this one can also go to this place by boat,
along the seashore of Chennai or Chengalpattu. |
