Daporijo is a census town in the
Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the headquarters of
Upper Subansiri district which is home land of four ethnic
groups viz. Galo, Tagin, Hillmiri and Nah tribes. And of
different belief background viz. Christianity, Donyi Poloism
and Animism. Daporijo is located at an altitude of 600 meters
above sea-level, the town is known for its rich variety of
flora and fauna and its ethnic diversity.
It is 327 km from Itanagar and 160
km from Ziro and is the headquarters of Upper Subansiri
district situated by the side of the Subansiri River. Daporijo
is a small scenic town where one can see suspension bridges
over Subansiri River made from bamboo and cane - a testimony
of rich tribal craftsmanship. The Sigem-Daporijo Reserve
forest and Kamala Reserve forest with its rich avi-fauna
diversity are worth seeing. Subansiri River is also ideal for
river rafting, angling and picnic.
Around the town there are a few
caves that can be seen as well and these can also be visited.
Some trekking spots can be seen in and around the town of
Daporijo.Museum and Craft Centre are other places which could
hold your interest. The town is known for being home to
different tribal communities of the region, and the culture
here is a unique mix of the different tribal groups with their
own distinctive culture and tradition. In fact, the indigenous
handicrafts and artifacts made by the local people are quite
colourful and unique, and give the place its own identity.
The town is known for being an ideal
place for trekking and nature walks. There are quite a few
beautiful trekking trails which are famous for trekking
expeditions and are the best way to explore the natural
magnificence of the town and the adjoining landscape. The
Subansiri River which is close to the town is good for
adventure activities like rafting and angling and adds to the
beauty of the scenery around.
The bamboo handicrafts and colourful
garments are amazing souvenirs to carry home and are easily
available in the local handicraft market. The main livelihood
of the people in the town especially among the women
population, is weaving, along with handicraft making, animal
husbandry and some bit of farming.
The villages around the town are
best to witness and closely experience the tribal life of the
region. There are a number of wonderful tribal villages like
Raga, Tamin and Mori which can be visited.
Daporijo is beautiful with greenery
all around and a variety of flora and fauna. The winter
months, especially October and November, are believed to be a
good time to visit the place since the weather during this
time is pleasurable and ideal for walking around and venturing
