Information about Gulbarga

The historic town earlier known as Kalburgi was the first capital of the Bahmani’s (1347 – 1525). It is also known as the abode of Saiyid Muhammad Gesu Daraz Chisti (1320 – 1422), who propagated Islam in the Deccan. An annual Urs Festival in his honour attracts a large number of devotees.

Tourist Attractions in Gulbarga

The Fort
It was originally built by Raja Gulchand and was later renovated and strengthened by Ala-ud-din Bahmani. Today, most of the fort lies in ruins but the Bala Hisar (citadel) is in good condition.

Jami Masjid
The magnificent mosque built by Firoz Shah (1397 – 1432) is only one of its kind in the country. It resembles the great Spanish mosque of Cordoba and is said to be designed by North African architect from the Moorish court. The entire area of 3,500 sq. mtrs. Is covered by a dome over the mihraab, there are also 4 corner domes and 75 minor domes which makes it an impressive structure.

The Tombs
The are two groups of tombs in the memory of Bahamani Sultans and nobles flanking the fort. The double storeyed tomb of Hazrat Gesu Nawaz with a beautiful dome is held very sacred. It is said to be built during the rule of Mahmud Adil Shah. The dargah library has rich collection of books in Urdu, Persian and Arabic. Elaborately decorated Haft Gumbaz built in the memory of Taj ud Din Firuz, is the most attractive tomb in the eastern group.

Gangapur (40 kms.)
It is known for the math (monastery) of Sri Narasimha Saraswati, set on the confluence of the rivers Bhima and Amjera. A large number of devotees gather during the annual yatra to Deval Gangapur in February.

Malkhed (40 kms.)
It is was the capital of the Rashtrakutas.

Shorapur (108 kms.)
The town earlier known as Surapura is associated with Raja Venkatappa Naik, who rebelled against the British in 1857. the Gopalswamy temple dedicated to Lord Krishna is very popular among devotees. An annual fair is held here on Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.
