Kalpetta, the headquarters of the charming Wayanad district was an important centre of Jainism. The Jain temple dedicated to Vardhamana Mahavir is one of the few Jain shrines in Kerala. The town also has the famous Maidani Mosque.

Tourist Attractions in Kalpetta

Koottamunda (20 kms.)
The magnificent Glass Temple on the slopes of Vellarimala is dedicated to Parswanatha Swami, the third Jain Tirthankara. The icons of Parswanatha Swami and Padmavathi Devi enshrined in the sanctum have thousand reflections in beautiful patterns on the mirrors placed on the inner side of the temple walls.

Chembra Peak (15 kms.)
This highest peak of Wayanad district lies near Meppady town. It affords breathtaking views and is a ‘trekker’s paradise’.

Pazhassi Tourist Resort, Mananthavadi (34 kms.)
This popular picnic site has entertainment facilities like, an aquarium, coin operated toys for children and boating facilities. Pazhassi Raja, the Lion of Kerala, who waged war against British East India Company, was cremated here in 1805.

Sultan’s Bathery (31 kms.)
The hill station and historical centre is noted for its 18th century for built by Tipu Sultan. The famous Panamarram for here played an important role during the Pazhassi Rebellion.

Vyittri (10 kms.)
The small town is surrounded by lush forests, dotted with lakes and waterfalls. Its virgin natural beauty provides a perfect off – beat holiday. There are a number excellent resorts in and around Vyittri. Staying at the tree top house is indeed a unique experience. Lakkidi, 5 kms. South of Vyittri is one the highest locations in the district and is the “Gateway to Wayanad’. It commands a panoramic view of the surroundings.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary 16 kms., west of Sultan Bathery is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It was established in 1973 and covers an area of 344 sq. kms., bordering the famous Mudumalai Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Nagarhole and Bandipur Sancturies in Karnataka. The key fauna includes, elephant, spotted deer, gaur, sloth bear and a large variety of birds and reptiles. The best season to visit the sanctuary is from December to April.
