Khonoma Village
About Khonoma Village

Khonoma Village is one of the most prominent villages of Nagaland. It is known for being the last base of the Naga warriors rebelling against the British Empire. Khonoma Village is located at a distance of 20 km from Kohima. Testimonies of the past years can be witnessed in traditionally carved gate, which provides access to the highest point of the village. Carved terraces in the hills draw the attention of the visitors, which are used for cultivation of 20 different types of paddy.

The name of Khonoma came from an oil bearing plant which grew in abundance in the area when the first settlers arrived. Locally called “Khwüno”, its scientific name is Glouthera Fragrantissima.  Khonoma was well-known for its resistance to British interruption into the Naga Hills in the 19th Century. It was in this popular Naga village that the last battle with the British took place in 1879-80 which  lasts over four months. This warrior village made the British Empire change its policy several times as to whether to come to the Naga Hills as they saw no economic advantage. But, later, this was to prove crucial in saving the British Empire from embarrassing defeat and humiliation during the World War II when the Japanese forces, along with the Indian National Army arrived and the Battle of Kohima became the turning point of the War in the Asian Theatre.

Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan sanctuary (KNCTS) was founded in 1998 by the ecologically conscious people of the village. This sanctuary covers an area of over 70 sq km and is privately owned and managed by the village community in Khonoma. It is also the habitat to many other endangered and rare species of plants and animals. The sanctuary is also a perfect place for adventure and nature study. The combination of rich bio-diversity and striking landscape makes Khonoma habitat an outstanding place for eco-tourism. Known for its beautiful natural landscape, Khonoma is a destination which truly makes for eco-tourism.

Location of Khonoma Village

Khonoma Village is situated about 20 km west of Kohima. Reputed for their courage and bravery, it is the village of A. Z Phizo, Father of Naga Nationalist Movement. It was here that the Naga warriors made their last stand against the British in 1879. A simple white pillar honors G H Damant, major C R Cock, Lieutenant H. H. Forbes and Sub-major Nurbir Sai, who died fighting the Nagas in Khonoma.

The Khonoma gate tells the story of the British penetration into Naga Hills. The village is referred to as “Khwünoria” by the residents is estimated to be around 700 years old and is enclosed by hills that are as high as 9000 ft. One of the outstanding features of Khonoma village is the presence of the fort called Kuda which literally means “a place of defense”. There is one fort in each of the three Locality.

Built on a high spur and trickling down the hill to its fields, this village is worth visiting just for its amazing views of mountains, waterfalls, and its varied and beautiful orchids. The Nagas are intensely proud of Khonoma, as it is where Naga fighters made a last stand against the British in 1879. On approaching the village, you will see memorial stones commemorating the Feast of Merit. Walking up a steep flight of stone steps, through a traditional carved gate, you reach the highest point of the village. This is where the battle took place; there is a white pillar memorializing some of the British and Indian soldiers who died here.Khonoma’s paddy terraces are well-known for allegedly producing 20 distinct varieties of rice, each specific to the height and soil condition of a field.
