Munnar |
Munnar is the most famous holiday destination,
in the Idukki district in Kerala. The high ranges of
Munnar were earlier known as Kanan Devan Hills, named
after Kanan devan, who had been a landlord in the
Anchanad valley on the eastern side of the district.
Munnar, the queen of hill stations is located at the confluence of three mountain streams namely,
Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala, along the western
Ghats on the eastern border of Kerala and was once the
summer resort of the British government in South India. Sprawling tea plantations, picture-book towns
and winding lanes make this a popular resort. There
are various plantations of tea, coffee, cardamom and
other spices, dense forests and wildlife sanctuaries in
Munnar. |

The various tourist attractions in Munnar are the Anaimudi, Rajmalai, Eravikulam National Park
and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Anamaudi peak is the highest
peak in South India that towers at a height of over 2695 m. The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to some of the rare species of flora and fauna.
Half of the entire population of Nilgiri Tahr is found in
Rajamalai. The places like Pothamedu, Lokheart Gap and Devikulam offer
various adventure, trekking, trout fishing and picnic opportunities. In
Attukal, Nayamakkad and Chithrapuram you
will enjoy the cascading waterfall and the alluring charm of plantations. Mattupetty
Lake is a calm spot for picnics
and boating.

The major wildlife animals which are found in Munnar are the Nilgiri Tahrs (Mountain Goats), Langurs and Elephants. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here, is the
Neelakurinji. This flower which bathes the hills in blue
every twelve years, will bloom next in 2006 AD. |
