Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake is a glacial lake in the East
Sikkim, India, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) away from Gangtok
at elevation of 3,780 m (12,400 ft) above see level and oval
in shape, 1 Km long and fifteen meeter deep.The road to Nathu
La passes the lake on north side. The Chinese border crossing
is only some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east-northeast in a
straight line, but some 18 kilometres by road.
Tsongmo Lake is one of the main reason why people visit
Sikkim. Indian Postal Service released a memorial stamp on the
lake on 6 November 2006.This glacial lake is located at an
altitude of 3,780 m and around 25 miles away from Gangtok.
Tsongmo Lake lake freezes during the winter months. Best time
to visit is Mid May to August. The area is controlled by the
Indian Army and required special permission to visit the
place.Heavy woolen cloths required to be worn throughout the
year. Rides on Yaks are offered at the lake side. One can have
tea and snacks at the lake side during the tourist season. It
is advised to avoid traveling to Changu Lake those who have
breathing problem due to shortage of air at this altitude.
