About Wokha

Wokha is a town which is situated in the Indian state of Nagaland. It is the third biggest Town in Nagaland. The term Wokha is taken from the Lotha language which mean Census. It is the district headquarter of Lotha Nagas, who generally call themselves as Kyong. The Town is located just below the renowned Naga Mountain peak Mount Tiyi which is at an altitude of 1968 metres above sea-level. Wokha is the land of the Lotha clan. Best Season to visit Wokha is during winters.

 
History of Wokha

Wokha was taken over by British Government in the year 1876 as the District Headquarters of the Naga Hills under Assam. By the year 1878 the headquarters was moved to Kohima, but Wokha continued a subdivision. Afterwards in the year 1889 the subdivision was moved to Mokokchung. Wokha again became a subdivision in the year 1957.

 
Geography and Climate

Wokha is located at 26.1°N 94.27°E. It has an average altitude of 1,313 metres. The summer temperature of Wokha varies from 16 °C, and 32 °C. The winter temperature reaches a minimum of 2 °C. Annual rainfall in Wokha differs between 2 and 2.5 meters.

Legends

Mount Tiyi is a hill which has mystical legends associated with it. Most Nagas consider that this mountain is the dwelling of departed souls. According to local Lotha tradition the mountain had an orchard that could only be found by the 'lucky ones. 'Rhododendrons are found generally on Mount Tiyi.

Tourism in Wokha

The Lotha tribesmen are very friendly and welcome tourists into Wokha with open arms. Important festivals which are celebrated in Wokha are Pikhuchak, Emong and Tokhu. At the time of the festivals one can witness the local dance and music of the region.

Wokha is famous for its shawls which are handmade using a method which has been passed from generation to generation. There are many tourist attractions in Wokha like Doyang River, Totsu Cliff and Mount Tiyi.

Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit to enter the State of Nagaland. It is a simple travel document which can be obtained from Nagaland House in Kolkata, Delhi, Shillong or Guwahati. Tourists can also apply for this permit to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Mokokchung and Dimapur.

By Rail:
From Wokha the nearest railway station is Furkating Railway Station in Golaghat, Assam which is at a distance of 84 kms from Wokha.

By Air:
From Wokha the nearest airport is Dimapur Airport which is situated at a distance of 125 kms from Wokha.

Taxis and buses are easily available from every district headquarter in Nagaland to Wokha. Helicopter Service is also provided from Dimapur.
