About Kufri

Kufri is a small scenic hill station at the foothills of Himalayas, it is located at the southern part of the state of Himachal Pradesh and is known for its pleasing climate and scenic beauty. It is a pleasant location near the imposing hill station Shimla. Kufri, perched at a height of 2,510 m above the sea level, it is famous for its picturesque trekking and hiking trails. It is located about 13 kms from the state capital Shimla on the National Highway No.22. This place got its name from the word ‘kufr’, which means ‘lake’ in the local language. This place witness tourists all round the year, due to the many attractions associated with it.

Adventurous travelers prefer to visit Kufri during winters to experience and enjoy the skiing and to bogganing along its snow clad mountainous slopes. Wonderful nature parks and scenic spots in the backdrop of natural settings are prime attractions in Kufri. Kufri is located at 31.10°N 77.25°E. It has an average elevation of 2,743 metres (9,000 feet).

Kufri is the highest point in the surrounding region, Kufri has a Himalayan Wild Life Zoo which hosts rare Antelopes, Felines and Birds including Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. During winter a meandering path through the potato plantations turns into a popular Ski track.

Kufri is a summer resort away from the busy life of urbanized regions. Those who seek quiet vacation in a cool and pleasant ambiance, picturesque environs and regions offering challenging and adventurous activities can opt for travel to Kufri. History of Kufri

The region around Shimla including Kufri was once a part of the Kingdom of Nepal until the area was ceded to the British Raj as part of the Sugauli Treaty. This region remained obscure from the rest of the world until the British 'discovered' it in 1819.

Sports lovers can also make it a point to witness the annual Winter Sports Festival. One can make it a point to witness the fairs and festivals of Kufri including the festival of Vinayak Chaturthi.

Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy different sports like Horse Riding, Skiing, Tobogganing, and go-karting during their stay at Kufri. Trekking

The most common trekking route in Kufri is to reach Kufri from Shimla, which is 19 kms away.

Skiing
Skiing in Kufri is a highly entertaining adventurous sport beckoning the adventurous tourists to participate. In winter, thousands of tourists assemble to Mahasu Bridge in Kufri for Skiing in the snow capped slopes.

Horse Riding
Horse riding is one of the most popular activity which tourists can enjoy in Kufri. It is not only a leisure but also to reach some places horses are the sole means of travel. Horse riding is must in Kufri in order to explore the highland of Kufri. Starting from the base of Himalayan National Park, tourists can enjoy a visit to the apple orchards and temples. On a clear evening, the exciting sunset at the Himalayan ranges can also be enjoyed.

Best Time to Visit Kufri

Summers in Kufri are pleasant with temperature hovering between 12 and 19 degree Celsius. Monsoon months remain cold with sparse showers. During winters, the temperature drops below zero degrees Celsius. It is the best time to experience snowfall. November to February is the best time to indulge in skiing. March-October is the best time to visit Kufri.

How to reach Kufri

By Rail
The nearest railhead is at Shimla in narrow gauge rail route and Broad Gauge railway station is at Kalka (100 km).

By Road

Buses link Kufri with Shimla, Narkanda and Rampur. State owned transport buses and private deluxe buses are available from Shimla to Kufri.

By Air
The nearest airport to Kufri is Jubbarbhatti Airport near Shimla which is at a distance of about 13 kms from Kufri. Regular flights are available from this airport to Delhi. Taxi services are available at the airport. International tourists can avail connecting flights at Delhi.
