About Peo

Reckong Peo, also simply known as Peo by the local inhabitants, is the capital of Kinnaur district which is one of the twelve administrative districts of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. The town of Rekong Peo is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the state.

Reckong Peo is located at an elevation of 2,290 metres (7,513 ft), Reckong Peo is 250 kilometres from Shimla and seven kilometres from Powari. Earlier Kalpa was the headquarters later changed to Reckong Peo, it was named after group of people who used to own this place in ancient times.

The town of Rekong Peo is generally known for its closeness to the land of Tibet, and there are various monasteries present in the region. There are many other Hindu temples in the region too.The town of Rekong Peo is thus a place of religious importance, and many pilgrims visit this town throughout the year. The town of Rekong Peo is located at a very high altitude of around 2670 metres, near the Kinner Kailash range, which houses the fabulous abode of Lord Shiva. There are many places of religious significance that can be visited during trip to Rekong Peo.

 
Tourist Attractions in Peo

Kalpa
Kalpa is a popular attraction and is home to two chief hotels of the Kinnaur Region of Himachal Pradesh, namely the Tourist Complex and Hotel Kinner Kailash. Kalpa is the main village of the Kinnaur Region which uis located at an elevation of 2,768 m above sea level. Tourists come here to get a view of Kinner Kailash Peak.

Chandika Temple
Chandika Devi Temple is located at a distance of 3 km from Reckong Peo in Kothi. This temple is in the village of Kothi and is dedicated to Goddess Chandika, who is worshipped with great respect by the locals. It is considered that she was the daughter of the demon Banasur, who presided over Kinnaur. The Chandika Devi Temple is set amidst deodar forests and snow capped peaks.

Kinner Kailash
The Kinner Kailash Peak has a 79 ft tall rock formulation, that appears like a Shiva Linga. It is a famous pilgrimage spot and this Shiva Linga changes colour throughout the day. Kinner Kailash is generally considered as one of the fabulous residences of Lord Shiva.

Bhaba Valley
The Bhaba Valley is a famous destination of the region and is located on the Bhaba river. The Bhaba Valley is popular among the trekkers, writers, poets and nature lovers, for its scenic landscapes.

Wildlife Sanctuaries
There are three wild life sanctuaries which are located in Reckong Peo, namely the Rupi- Bhaba Sanctuary, the Rakchham-Chhitkul Sanctuary and the Lipa- Asrang Sanctuary. These sanctuaries are home to a variety of wildlife, including species like ibex, red fox, yak, leopard, goral, musk deer, brown beer, blue sheep and the Himalayan black deer.

Hu Bu Ian Car Gompa is a famous destination among Tibetans and Buddhists who visit the town of Rekong Peo.

Narayan Nagani temple is a prominent tourist attraction in the region.

How To Reach Reckong-Peo

By Rail
Reckong-Peo does not have a railway station, and the nearest station is Shimla which is at a distance of 116 kms from Reckong-Peo

By Road
State owned as well as private bus services are available for the tourists. Cab facility is also available. One can reach Kinnaur via Chandigarh which is at a distance of 350 km from Kinnaur or from Shimla which is 229 kms from Kinnaur or from kullu which is 245 kms from Kinnaur.

By Air
There is no direct flight to Kinnaur and the nearest Airport is Shimla which can be reached from Delhi.
