About Jagdish Temple

Jagdish Temple is a large Hindu shrine which is situated in the city of Udaipur inside the complex of city palace. It is a very prominent tourist spot, initially it was called the temple of Jagannath Rai but now it is called Jagdish-ji. It is a main shrine in Udaipur dedicated to Lord Laxmi Narayan. The Jagdish Temple is built on a tall terrace. It was founded in the year 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh Ji, the ruler of Udaipur during 1628-53. The construction of the temple was completed in the year 1651. Paths taking off from various city walls meet at the Jagdish Temple. It is an example of Maru-Gurjara. It connects a double-storey Mandapa (hall) with a double-storey saandhara with a covered ambulatory chamber. The mandapa has another storey inserted within its pyramidal samavarna (bellroof) while the hollow clustered spire over the chamber has two more nonfunctional legends.

This large statue stands as if; it is safeguarding the entrance of Lord Vishnu.

The main temple has the remarkable four-armed image of Lord Vishnu. This statue is engraved from a single piece of black stone. A single sight of the statue takes the person to the celestial world to find everything calm and quiet. The main temple of Lord Jagdish/ Vishnu is situated centrally surrounded by four smaller temples. These temples are devoted to Goddess Shakti, Lord Shiva, Sun God and Lord Ganesha.
