Kozhikode,
also known as Calicut was once the
capital of the powerful Zamorins and a main trade and
commerce centre in Kerala. Kozhikode was also the most important
region of Malabar in the earlier days. Kozhikode covers
an area of 2206 square km. Today, lush green country
sides, serene beaches, historic sites, backwater
destinations, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, hills, a
unique culture and a warm friendly ambience make
Kozhikode a popular destination. Ma Huan also called
this place as the great country of the Western Ocean.

History of Kozhikode |
Kozhikode was once the capital of the Zamorins. The zamorins
converted this place into the trading and commercial port. Marco
Polo also visited this place on his way back home from China, in
search of textiles, especially calico, a special type of cotton.
The Chinese also built homes and warehouses in Kozhikode. Vasco
Da Gama landed at Kappad in Calicut in 1498. |

Festivals in Kozhikode |
Malabar Mahotsavam, Sivarathri, Utsavam at Sreekanteswara Temple
and Jalotsavam are the three important festivals which are
celebrated in Kozhikode. Malabar Mohatsavam is a grand festival
of the Malabar region where one can see various traditional and
culture art forms that make it a spectacular cultural
extravaganza. This festival is held in the month of January. As
a part of the Onam festival, three Jalotsavams (water fiestas)
are held every year by sports clubs at Korappuzha, Moorad and
Pongilodippara. These are colourful cultural pageants that
precede the boat races on Onam day. |

The nearest airport is located at
Karipur,
about 23 kms
from Kozhikode. The flights daily operates to Mumbai, Chennai,
Bangalore and the Middle east.

India.
