Like many other regional languages of India, Gujarati is also
a part of Indo-European family of languages and belongs to a
Central Zone Indo-Aryan subfamily. It is closely related to
Punjabi and Hindi. The main Dialects of Gujarati language are
Standard Gujarati, Gamadia Gujarati, Parsi Gujarati,
Kathiawari Gujarati, Kharwa Gujarati, Kakari Gujarati,
Tarimuki Gujarati and East African Gujarati. Gujarati is a
descendent of Sanskrit but it is written in its own script
known as Abugida script. Gujarati is one of the ancient
languages of India that has its origins in Puranic Sanskrit
(500-50 B.C.). Gujarati has been influenced by a number of
languages due to continual invasion and conquest over the
course of its history. A clear impression of languages like,
Persian (Farsi), Arabic, Hindi/Urdu, Portuguese, and English
can be seen on modern Gujarati.
Gujarati community is spread in many foreign
countries but the largest groups of Gujarati-speaking
populations outside India are found in the United Kingdom and
in the United States. In UK, the two main centers of Gujarati
speaking groups are Wembley and Leicester and in the United
States, they are mainly found in New Jersey, New York, Texas,
and California. In all such communities, language use is
vibrant and employed in a number of forms of communication
such as newspaper publications, radio, and everyday
communication. |
