FORTS & MAN MADE CAVES
Goa has many forts of the 16th century, built by
the Portuguese rulers. Though most them are in ruins, a visit
to Fort Aguada near Sinquerim along its old lighthouse-the
oldest in Asia, is worthwhile. The Triacol for on the
northernmost fringe of Goa was occupied by the Portuguese in
1746. This fort has now been converted into a hotel with a
restaurant. Tiracol and Chapora Forts at Vagator were used to
ward off the Maratha warriors. The forts at
Cabo de Rama,
Alorna, Mormugao, Manus and Reis Magos are in a
state of dilapidation. The fort at Rachol, 12 Km from Margao
is another Old Portuguese fort built during 1521. It was
used as a prison during Portuguese time and is now a
Seminary of Centre for Theological Education.
The idalcao
Palace of Ibrahim Adilshah of Bijapur was the Secreteriat
till recently and is now going to be converted to a centre for
Art and culture.
Pansaimol Caves:
The notable
caves which appear as proto-temples are located at Aravalem in
Sakhalim, Lamgao in Bicholim, Khandepar in Ponda and Rivona in
Quepem. The most remarkable are the extensively-researched 4th
century caves under ASI supervision at Aravalem. These caves
have lingas that belong to the Skanda-Kartikaya-Surya cult of
the ancient tantra practitioners. A mythical background is
attached to these inscriptions on a Shivalinga in cave no. 2
is in Sanskrit and in Brahmi characters of 7th
Century AD.
The Lamgao caves
are baffling because they
show transition from Buddhist to Brahminic form. Aravalem
caves are 3 kms away from Sankhali.

LAKES & WATERFALLS:
Goa has many
lakes and waterfalls amidst breathtaking landscapes.
|
Mayem Lake
in Bicholim provides pedal boating facilities.
Kesarval Spring,
22 Km south of
Panaji, on the road to Margao, is said to have medicinal
properties.
Aravlem
Waterfalls
in Bicholim is
amidst verdant and sylvan surroundings.
The cold water springs at
Pomburpa
are 10 km from Panjai. The
Dudhsagar
Waterfalls
60 km east of Panaji and 10 Km from Colem, is a
trekking paradise. It is a grand spectacle during and
immediately after monsoon. The lake at
Netravali
in
Sanguem taluka has unique characteristics: bubbles emerge
continuously on its surface, and upon clapping their intensity
grows. Live springs suddenly gush out. |
