The temple of
Shatadurga
built in 1728
AD at Kavlem is dedicated to the peaceful avatar of Durga. It
is 33 Km east of Panaji. The temple of

Mangueshi temple, at Mardol is located the temple of Shri
Mahalsa.

was worshipped by the Shilahara rulers (750-1030AD) and also

500 years old. 37 Km from Panaji at Dttawadi, Sanquelim is the
famous Shri Datta Mandie, a century old
temple
of Trimurthy. The favoured deity of the Kadamba rulers of Goa was
Shri
Saptakoteshwar, 37 km from Panaji at
Narve in Bicholim. This shiva temple was renovated in 1668 by
Chatrapati Shivaji.
The remarkable temple of
Shre Mahadev at
Tembdi Surla
built in the 13th Century is the
only specimen of Kadamba-Yadava architecture. The Temple of

at
Morjim is in Pernem subdivisions; its main festival ‘Kalas
Utsav’ is celebrated once in every 3, 5, 7 or 9 years. The
temple of

Chandranath,
45 Km from Panaji, is perched on a high hill of Chandranath,
at Paroda in Quepem subdivision. It was the titular diety of
the Bhoja kings who ruled South Goa till the middle of the 8th
Century AD. In Zambaulim in Sanguem is the temple of
Shri
Damodar,
located in the picturesque surrounding on the
banks of the river Kushavati. The festival of colours, Holi,
which is called Shigmo in Goa is celebrated here in March.
Situated at Vithalapur, Sankhali is the
Shri Vithal Mandir.
It is on the banks of the holy river, Valvanti. Shri
Vithal is the ancestral God of ‘Ranes’. The main festival is
‘Chaitri’ (April) and Tripurari Poornima (Boat Festival)
Shre Rudreshwar
Temple
at Harvalem is half a km away from the rock-cut
caves of Harvalem, where the ancient linga of rudreshwar is
venerated. The idyllic Harvalem waterfalls are closed by.
Mahashivratri attract big crowds here.

CHURCHES:
Old Goa is called the Rome of the East, it is not very
surprising. The largest church building activity apart from
the Vatican was witnessed in Goa.
The Basilica of
Bom Jesus
is an imposing structure of Renaissance
architecture, built in the 16th Century, housing
the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.
Se Cathedral
was completed in 1642; it is
the largest cathedral in Asia. It is dedicated to St.Catherine. This imposing
structure is famous for its golden bell.
The church of St. Francis of Assisi
was completed
in 1661. It is noted for its unique entrance and Manueling
style of architecture the only example of the kind in the
Orient. The earliest of all churches in Goa is the Church of Our Lady
of Rosary. It bears
an inscription about the conquest of Goa by Alfonso de Albuquerque.
The Nunnery of
Santa Monica
is the only one
of its kind in Goa.
The Church of
St. Cajetan
has a close resemblance with St. Peter’s
Basilica in Basilica in Rome.
The Reis Magos Church
constructed in
1555, was once the residence of dignitaries and also a mission
centre of the Franciscan order.
The Church of Mae de
Deus
at Saligao
built in 1875 is a remarkable testimony of Gothic
architecture. It has the shrine of the miraculous statue of
Mae de Dues.
The Church of Our Lady of
Immaculate
Conception,
Panaji was built in 1541. The Feast of the
Immaculate
Conception is celebrated on 8th
December.
