Kunzum Pass is a high mountain pass which is located at an
elevation of 4,590 m on the eastern Kunzum Range of the
Himalayas about 122 km from Manali. It connects the Lahul
Valley and Kullu Valley with the Spiti Valley of Himachal
Pradesh, India. It is on the route to kaza which is the
subdivisional headquarters of spiti valley. There is also a 14
km trek to the moon lake of the Chandratal from the kunzum
pass. Rohtang pass is a gateway to Lahaul. After crossing
Rohtang pass and driving 20 kms, one has to turn right from
Gramphoo. While going to this pass, the panoramic view of
Bara-Sigri glacier (second longest glacier in the world) is
enchanting and exciting.
Goddess Kunjum (Durga/Parvati) resides in a temple on the
Kunzum top and keeps guard over the pass. Visitors normaly
take a round around the temples to seek blessings of Goddess.
Chandratal Lake is 7 km from Kunzum Pass. While traveling to
the Kunzum Pass one can view the Bara-Sigri Glacier which is
the second largest Glacier in the world. The top of the valley
offers a amazing landscape with majestic Chandra Bhaga ranges
surrounding it on the north sides with snow clapped peaks and
huge glaciers threatening to block the valley any moment. The
other side is the Spiti valley with its dessert like terrain.
There is a temple at the top of this pass which is dedicated
to goddess Durga. After seeing this pass one can drive to
Batal for a night stay in the Rest House. The view from the
top is wonderful. On one side is the Spiti valley and to the
other are numerous Chandra Bhaga range peaks. On way back from
Gramphoo one can either return to Manali or can go to Leh via
Keylong , Darcha, Tanglang la, Sarchu, Baralacha la by road.
The best time to visit Kunzum Pass is from June end to
September end. Rest of the year, the Pass remains cut off from
rest of the world due to heavy snow fall.
Kunzum Pass is popular among tourists visiting Lahaul, Spiti
and Manali. It offers amazing views of Bara-Sigri glacier
which is the second longest glacier in the world.
Chandra-Bhaga Mountain and Spiti Valley. Are also visible from
the top of the pass. Signs of Buddhist influence in and around
Kunzum Pass, is visible in the form of chortens and prayer
flags.
Kunzum Devi Temple is also popular for those passing through
Kunzum Pass. As per a local tradition, all vehicles stop at
the temple to pay obeisance to the deity. Kunzum is also
popular with trekkers and adventure seekers. The 12 km trek to
Chandratal is very popular. |
