Information about Chinnar Wildlife
Sanctuary
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Idukki district
in Kerala. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the rain
shadow region of the Western Ghats. As a result, Chinnar gets
only about 48 rainy days in a year during the months of
October and November. The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary occupies
the forested region on either side of the Marayoor – Udumalpet
road. This sanctuary is the second habitat of the endangered
giant grizzled squirrel in India. This sanctuary offers the
unique advantage of watching its fascinating wildlife at close
quarters from the road without going deep into the jungles.
The Marayoor sandal forest and the beautiful Thoovanam
waterfalls are also located here. This sanctuary covers an
area of 90.422 square km. The place is also ideal for boating
and trekking.
Vegetation in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The vegetation in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary consists of
the thorny scrub forest with Xerophytic species, dry deciduous
forests and high shoals and wetlands. Some of the plants in
the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are Karivelam, Velvelam,
Kallimullu, Sandal, Tamarind, Nirmaruthu, Pongau, Rosewood,
Teak, Konna, Thanni, Nelli, Bhadraksham and Neelakurinji.
Best Time to Visit Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
However, the best time to visit the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
is almost throughout the year, but the tourists are not
allowed during October and November.
Wildlife Attractions in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The major wildlife attraction in the Chinnar wildlife
sanctuary is the endangered giant grizzled squirrel. Besides
this, some other wildlife animals found in this sanctuary are
Elephants, Tigers, Gaurs, Spotted deer, Panthers, Sambars,
Hanuman Langurs, Rabbits, Bonnet Macaque, Kraits, Spectacled
cobras, Turtles, Vipers, Little cormorants, Darters and black
eagles.
How to reach Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
By Air:
The nearest airport is located at Coimbatore and Kochi
(Cochin).
By Rail:
The nearest railway station is located at Pollachi, which is
about 60 kms and Aluva which is about 200 kms.
By Road:
The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is easily connected with Cochin
and various other cities of Kerala. |
