Information about the Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park is situated in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki district in Kerala,
about 15 kms. north of Munnar. Eravikulam National
Park was established in 1975 to protect the
Nilgiri Tahr. Eravikulam was declared as a
National Park in 1978 considering its ecological,
faunal, floral, geomorphologic and zoological
significance. The park is breathtakingly beautiful
as comparable to the Alpine ranges. Anaimudi peak,
the highest mountain peak in South India is
situated in the southern region of the park. This
park covers an area of 97 square km. This park is
one of the wettest regions in the world. The park
is divided into three regions - the core area, the
buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are
allowed to visit only the tourism area which is in
the Rajmalai region.
Wildlife attractions in Eravikulam National
Park
The major wildlife attractions in the Eravikulam
National Park are the Nilgiri Tahr. Almost half of
the world population of Nilgiri Tahr is found in
the Eravikulam National Park. According to 1991
census, about 1317 Nigiri Tahrs are found in this
park. The various other animals which are found in
the Eravikulam National Park are the Tigers,
panthers, Wild dog in the open grasslands and
shola woods, Civet cat, Jungle cat in the sholas,
Sloth bear, Nilgiri langur and wild boar in the
shola forests and their fringes. The Altas moth,
the largest of its kind in the world, can also be
seen in this park.
Best time to visit Eravikulam National Park
The best time to visit the Eravikulam National
Park is in the early morning and evening. The best
season to visit this park is from September to
November and from April to June. The visitors are
not allowed to visit during the monsoon. Frost is
common in the winters from December to February.
Vegetation in the Eravikulam National Park
The vegetation comprises of rolling grasslands,
exotic flora and the shoal forests. The
Neelakurinji is the exotic flora found in the
forests and grasslands here. This flower which
bathes the hills in blue every twelve years, will
bloom next in 2006 AD.

By Air:
The nearest airport is located at Kochi which is
about 135 kms.
By Rail:
The nearest railway station is located at Aluva
which is about 115 kms. from Munnar.
By Road:
Eravikulam National Park is about 15 kms. from
Munnar, 135 kms. from Kochi and 148 kms. from
Kottayam by road. |
