Information about Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 50 kms
north east of the Thiruvananthapuram district in
Nedumangad taluk in Kerala. The catchment area of
the Peppara Dam constructed across the Karamana
River, was declared as a sanctuary in 1983. About
13 tribal settlements are residing in the
sanctuary, 11 of them are settled in the
Athirumala section and 2 are settled in the
Thodayar section. The Peppara Wildlife sanctuary
covers an area of 53 square kms.
Vegetation in the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
The vegetation in the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
consists of the hilly terrain at the height of 100
to 1717 m above sea level, southern hilltop
tropical evergreen forests at 1000 m above sea
level, on less favourable soil and climatic
conditions, west coast evergreen forests that form
a transitional zone between the evergreen and
moist deciduous slopes at the 150 m to 1050 m
above sea level and in the riparian areas. The
southern moist deciduous mixed forests covers 60%
of the tract along the lower slopes.
Wildlife Attractions in the Peppara Wildlife
Sanctuary
The major wildlife animals found in in the Peppara
Wildlife Sanctuary are the Elephant, Gaur, Sambar,
Barking deer, Wild boar, Tiger, Panther, Wild dog,
Malabar squirrel, Lion-tailed macaque, Mouse deer
and Nilgiri langur. Besides this, various reptiles
are also found in the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
like King cobra, python and a variety of moths and
butterflies. Various birds are also found in this
sanctuary like Darter, little cormorant, pied
kingfisher and egret.

kms.

The nearest railway station is located at
Thiruvananthapuram.
By Road:
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary can be easily
reached from Vithura on the Thiruvananthapuram -
