Information about Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the
Wayanad district in Kerala. The Wayanad Wildlife
Sanctuary was established in 1973 and contiguous
to the protected area network of Nagarhole and
Bandipur of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu.
This sanctuary is rich in biodiversity and an
integral part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve,
which was established with the specific objective
of conserving the biological heritage of the
region. The management of the sanctuary lays
emphasis on scientific conservation with due
consideration to the general lifestyle of the
tribes and others who live on the fringes of the
forest. These forests also have a historical
importance as it was from here that Pazhassi Raja
fought the British.
Vegetation in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
The vegetation in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
consists of the moist deciduous forest of Teak,
Maruthi, Karimaruthi, rosewood, Venteak, Vengal,
Chadachi, Mazhukanjiram, Bamboo and and semi
evergreen forest of Veteria Inica, Lagerstroemia
Lanceolata and Terminalia Paniculata.

Sanctuary
The major wildlife animals found in the Wayanad Wildlife
Sanctuary are Elephant, Tiger, Panther,
Jungle Cat, Civet Cat, Monkey, Wild dog, bison,
deer, bear, etc. The elephants occupies prime
position. Interstate seasonal migration of
elephants is common. The tiger population in the
sanctuary is fairly good. Monitor lizard, variety
of snakes, birds like peacock, babbler, cuckoo,
owl, woodpecker, jungle fowl, etc. can also be
seen in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
