Idukki
Idukki, a landlocked district, is one of the most nature
rich areas of Kerala. Idukki is the largest district in
Kerala and covers an area of 5105.22 square kms at an
altitude of 2200 m above sea level. Idukki is located in
the middle part of Kerala and bordered in the east by
Madurai, in the west by Ernakulam and Kottayam, in the
south by the Pathanamthitta and in the north by Trichur
and Coimbatore districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The
name Idukki has been derived from the Malayalam word 'Idukku'

rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar and their
tributaries. The river Pamba also originated here. This
beautiful district of Kerala is geographically known for its
mountainous hills and dense forests. Idukki is a famous

wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation tours,
mountain treks, elephant rides, etc. |

Tribes in Idukki
Idukki is one of the districts in the state where linguistic
minority exists. The linguistic minority consists mainly of
Tamil origin. They are mainly workers in the tea and cardamom
plantations, spread in Peermede, Udumbanchola and Devikulam
taluks regions of Idukki. Idukki has a large number of tribes.
The main tribes in Idukki are Muthuvan, Malayarayan, Mannan,
Paliyan, Urali, Uladan, Malavedan and Malampandaram. The
tribes of Kerala have unique customs and beliefs and maintain
an ethos which is distinctly different from that of the
mainstream culture. |

Tourist Attractions
in Idukki
Idukki offers diverse tourist attractions like wildlife
sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantations and
mountain treks. The major tourist attraction in Idukki
are the Idukki Arch Dam, Nadukani, Thumpachi Calveri
Samuchyam and Kalliyanathandu. The Idukki Wildlife

sanctuary and Eravikulam National Park are the
famous wildlife sanctuaries in Idukki. The Idukki Arch Dam is
the world's second and Asia's first arch dam, constructed
across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. Nadukani and
Kalliyanathandu are the famous picnic spots in Idukki and
offers panoramic view of the peaks and ranges.

How to reach Idukki
By Air:
The nearest airports are located at Madurai and Kochi which
are about 200 and 110 kms respectively.
By Rail:
The nearest railway station is located at Theni which is about
60 kms and others are located at Kottayam, Madurai and
Changancherry.
By Road:
Idukki can be easily reached from Kottayam, Munnar and Kumily.
The National Highway NH 49 and State highways 13 and 33 passes
through the district. There are also a number of places like
Edamalakudy which are not accessible even by road. |
