about 71 km to the north of Thiruvananthapuram. This city was
a major international trading point and international spice
trade centre in the earlier days. 30% of this historic town is
covered by the renowned Ashtamudi Lake, making it the gateway
to the magnificent backwaters of Kerala. Kollam covers an area
of 2579 square kms and is situated at the sea level. This
historic coastline district is known for its marine and cashew
industries and is the major centre of the country's cashew
trading and processing industry. The district also has some
interesting historic remnants and number of temples built in
the traditional ornate style of architecture. The eight hour
trip between Kollam and Alappuzha is the longest and the most
enchanting backwater cruise in Kerala. |

Tourist Attractions in Kollam
The major tourist attraction in Kollam are its two
beaches and Palaruvi
Waterfalls. The two beaches in Kollam are the
Thangasseri beach and Thirumullavaram beach. The
Thangasseri beach is situated about 5 kms from Kollam.
This seaside village has the ruins of an old Portuguese
fort and churches built in the 18th century. This beach
also has a Thangasseri Lighthouse. The Thirumullavaram
Beach is a beautiful picnic center. The Palaruvi
waterfalls makes its way down the rocks, from a height
of 300 feet. The Palaruvi wood is a beautiful picnic
spot situated about 75 kms. from Kollam.
