The district of Palakkad is known as the granary of
Kerala. Palakkad is a land of valleys, hillocks, rivers,

Palakkad is situated in the foot of the Western Ghats,

name from the Malayalam words Pala (Alsteria scholaris) and
Kadu (forest), which tells that this place was once a
beautiful stretch of forests covered with the sweet scented
flowers of the Pala tree. |

Attractions in Palakkad
The main tourist attractions in Palakkad are Palakkad Fort,
Malampuzha, Kollengode, Lakkidi, Jain Temple of Jainimedu,
Thrithala, Chittur Gurumadam and Attappady. Silent Valley
National Park and Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary are the
famous wildlife sanctuaries which are situated in the Palakkad
district of Kerala. Nelliyampathys is the famous hill station
in Palakkad. The Palakkad Fort is the main tourist attraction

Festivals in
Palakkad
Some of the festivals which are celebrated in Palakkad are
Kalpathi Ratholsavam, Vela at Manappuli Kavu, Nenmara Vallengi
Vela, Konganpada of Chittur and Pattambi Neracha. Kalpathi
Ratholsavam is an annual chariot festival at Viswanatha
Temple, celebrated in the month of November. Vela at Manappuli
kavu is an annual festival which is held at the Bhagavathy
temple in March. Nenmara Vallengi Vela is also an annual
festival which is held at the Bhagavathy Temple at
Nellikkulangara near Nenmara on the Pooram day of the
Malayalam month of Meenam (Feb / March). The major highlight
of this festival are the firework displays. Konganpada of
Chittur is annual festival of ritual drama that is held at the
Chittur Kavu Bhagavathy Temple. The Pattambi Neracha festival
is conducted in the memory of Aloor Valia Pookkunjikoya
Thangal, known for the Muslim saint of South Malabar. |
