Kozhikode, also known as Calicut was once the capital of
the powerful Zamorins and a main trade and commerce
centre in Kerala. Kozhikode was also the most important

History of
Kozhikode
Kozhikode was once the capital of the Zamorins. The zamorins
converted this place into the trading and commercial port.
Marco Polo also visited this place on his way back home from
China, in search of textiles, especially calico, a special
type of cotton. The Chinese also built homes and warehouses in
Kozhikode. Vasco Da Gama landed at Kappad in Calicut in 1498.
Backwaters in Kozhikode
The backwaters of Kozhikode are unexplored and unspoiled and
hold great promises for the enchanting holidays. Elathur, the
Canoli Canal and the Kallai River are the best destinations
for boating. Korapuzha, the venue of the Korapuzha Jalstsavam

Festivals in Kozhikode
Malabar Mahotsavam, Sivarathri, Utsavam at Sreekanteswara
Temple and Jalotsavam are the three important festivals which
are celebrated in Kozhikode. Malabar Mohatsavam is a grand
festival of the Malabar region where one can see various
traditional and culture art forms that make it a spectacular
cultural extravaganza. This festival is held in the month of
January. As a part of the Onam festival, three Jalotsavams
(water fiestas) are held every year by sports clubs at
Korappuzha, Moorad and Pongilodippara. These are colourful
cultural pageants that precede the boat races on Onam day.
How to reach Kozhikode
By Air:
The nearest airport is located at Karipur, about 23 kms from
Kozhikode. The flights daily operates to Mumbai, Chennai,
Bangalore and the Middle east. The Chennai flight also touches
Coimbatore and Madurai.
By Rail:
Kozhikode is well connected to all the major cities and
tourist destinations in India.
By Road:
An excellent network of roads connects the district to all the
