The various tourist attractions in Kannur are the Payyambalam

Fort
St. Angelo Fort is situated about 3 kms. from Kannur. This sea
facing fort was constructed in 1505 AD by the first Portuguese
Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeda, with the consent of the
Kolathiri Raja. This fort was later transferred from the
Portuguese to the Dutch and then to the English and thus
became one of the important military centres of the British in
Malabar. Now, this fort is maintained by the Archaeological
Survey of India and offers fascinating views of the Mappila
bay fishing harbour and Dharmadam Island. |

Parassinikadavu
The Sri Muthappan Temple is situated on the banks of the
Valapattanam River, about 18 kms from Kannur in
Parassinikadavu. This temple is one of the important pilgrim
sites of Kerala. This temple is famous for the Muthappan
Theyyam ceremony which is performed every morning and evening.
The Snake Park is the only one of its kind in the state and
perhaps in the whole of India. The unique snake farm is amidst
scenic settings is dedicated to preservation and conservation
of the snakes. The centre has about 150 species of snakes
housed in 3 well maintained snake pits and 15 glass cages and
2 large glass houses for King Cobras. The snake
demonstrations are conducted every hour and draws large
crowds of visitors.
Gundert Bungalow
Dr. Herman Gundert, the revered German missionary, scholar and
lexicographer lived in the Gundert Bungalow for 20 years from
1839. This bungalow is located about 20 km from Kannur, near
the town of Thalasseri. It was here that one of the first
Malayalam dictionaries and the first Malayalam newspaper
Paschimodayam took shape. |

Temple
Trichambaram Temple is one of the famous sacred place of the
Vaishnavas. This temple is dedicated to the Lord Krishna. The
sculptures on the walls of the temple are very unique. The
annual temple festival, usually held in March, is a very
colourful festival held in this temple.
Muzhapilangad Beach
Muzhapilangad Beach is situated on the Thalassery – Kannur
route and is one of the longest and cleanest beaches in the
State. The black rocks protect this beach from the currents of
the deep, making its shallow waters a swimmer's paradise. This
is the Kerala's only drive-in beach where you can drive down
the entire length of 4 kms.
Payyambalam Beach
The Payyambalam beach is situated about 2 km from Kannur. This
beach is famous for its flats laterite cliffs that jut into
the sea. This long, secluded beach is a local picnic spot. The
well laid out gardens and the massive landscaped sculpture of
Mother and Child make it extremely captivating.
Valapattanam
The small town on the Valapattanam river is situated about 7
kms from Kannur. This town is well known for its wood-based
industries and timber trade. The port of Azhikkal and Azhikkal
beach are located nearby. Western India Plywoods Limited, the
largest wood-based industry in India and also one of the
largest of its kind in South East Asia, is a major industry
here. |

Meenkunnu Beach
Meenkunnu beach is very uncrowded, and a tourists’
paradise, with golden sand and surf.
Thalasseri Fort

military centre of the British and is now, a historical
monument. The SAI Gymnastic Centre, an old Muslim mosque, the
Jagannatha Temple and Thiruvangad Sree Rama Swami Temple are
other attractions which are located near this fort. |

Arakkal
Kettu
Arakkal Kettu, is located about 3 km from Kannur. It was the
residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim
royal family of Kerala.
Pazhassi Dam
Pazhassi Dam is an ideal retreat for tourists in Kerala. This
picturesque dam is famous for its scenic beauty. The boating
facilities are also available at the reservoir.
Thodeekulam Siva Temple
Thodeekulam Siva Temple is located about 2 km from Kannavam on
the Thalasseri-Mananthavady road in the Kannur district. This
temple is famous for its mural paintings. This temple was
constructed 2,000 years ago and was closely connected with the
Pazhassi Raja family of Kottayam.
Sree Ramaswami Temple, Thiruvangad
Sree Rama Swami Temple is located in Thiruvangad, about 23 kms.
from Kannur. This temple is dedicated to Sri Rama and one of
the most important temples in Malabar. The exquisite carvings
in the temple were done about 400 years ago.
Madayi Para
The Madayi Kavu Temple, the Vadukunnu Temple and the 12th
century mosque built by Malik bin Dinar with white marble
imported from Arabia, are the major attractions in Madayi
Para. There is also a dilapidated fort at Madayi which was
believed to be built by Tipu Sultan of Mysore. The view from
the fort is fascinating.
Ezhimala
The Ezhimala is a small beautiful beach, about 53 kms from
Kannur. This beach has a hillock nearby (286 m high). Carved
stone pillars and an ancient burial chamber can be seen at the
foot of the hills. The hills are mainly known for the rare
medicinal herbs. A Naval Academy is also being developed here.
Pythal Mala
Pythal Mala is located about 65 kms. from Kannur. This
enchanting hill station is situated about 4500 feet above sea
level near Kerala - Karnataka border. This place is rich in
flora and fauna. It is a six kilometre trek to the top of the
hills. |
