Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and till it was

separated from Assam, it served also as the capital of the whole of Assam. Shillong, the capital city is located in the Khasi hills. The British also described Shillong as the “Scotland of the East” as the landscape reminded them of their home. It is located at a height of 1500 metres. The climate is temperate and the people very colourful and warm-hearted. Khasi, Garo, Jaintia, Bengalis and various other hill tribes lives in Shillong and speak Assamese, English, Bengali and Hindi. October to May is the best season to visit Shillong. Shillong is 100 kms. from Guwahati, only three hours drive. The drive to Shillong is picturesque passing through pineapple and betel plantations. Set in pine forests and heather clad hills, Shillong has beautiful lakes and waterfalls. This is a popular hill station which was favoured by the British and has a famous 18 hole golf course and a polo ground. From its top, you can have a good view of the orchard country and see the meadows and hamlets of Bangladesh and on a clear day, many of the snow clad peaks.

Adventure Activities in Shillong
The Archery Stakes for which the bows and arrows are sold, are unique to Shillong. Bookies stalls are set up daily under the canopies on an open stretch of ground where archers from clubs belonging to the Khasi Archers Association shoot 1500 arrows at a cylindrical bamboo target for four minutes. The betters count the number that stick and any one who has guessed the last two digits of the number of the arrows that stick is rewarded with an 8:1 win. The golf course in Shillong is one of the best golf course in India. The golf course has a reputation of being the wettest but is one of the most beautiful in the world.

 

Tourist Attractions in Shillong
Shillong has a number of beautiful sites like the Uniam Lake, Kyllang Rock, Nartiang, Ward's lake, Lady Hydari park, Polo ground, Mini zoo, Shillong peak, and the golf course, which is one of the best in the country. Shillong has many natural waterfalls like Bishop and Bidon Falls, Gunner Falls, Crinoline Falls and Elephant Falls.

By Air:

By Train:

The nearest railway station is located at Guwahati, which is well connected to the rest of the country. There are train services from Calcutta, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum.

By Road:
