BAIRAT
About
85 km. (53 miles) to the north-east of Jaipur, on the road to Delhi,
is Bairat, identified with Biratpuri of epic times. According to
tradition, the Pandavas passed the thirteenth year of their exile at
the court of the king of Bairat. Later, it became an important
Buddhist centre. The Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang has described the
place and its Buddhist monasteries. It was invaded by Mahmud of Ghazni
twice in 1009.
One of Asoka’s edict-stones was discovered at Bairat. The edict
commends the study of select passages from Buddhist scriptures ans is
a pointer to Asoka’s religious inclinations. Excavations in the valley
have brought to light remains of a large Buddhist monastery, a
circular temple believed to be one of the oldest structural temples,
silver coins, terracotta figurines of yakshis, pottery and objects of
daily use to Buddhist monks. Some coins of Greek and Indo-Greek kings
were found here in 1940. The temple of Parsvanath, Bhimji-ki-Dungri
and Bijak-ki-Pahari are the principal objects of archaeological and
antiquarian interest at Bairat.
