Day 01: New Delhi
Around midnight arrival in New Delhi. The cosmopolitan city and capital of
India is the main gateway for travellers to
India. Upon arrival, you will be met by an Indo Vacations representative and transferred to the hotel.
Day 02: New Delhi - Leh (by
air)
In the morning transfer to the airport to board flight for
Leh, the capital of Ladakh. Arrival in Leh in the afternoon. Due to its altitude (3500 m)
Ladakh is known as the roof of the world. Leh was an important place in the historical times on the silk road to central Asia. The rest of the day is at leisure to acclaim ourselves to this high altitude of Leh.
Day 03: Leh Excursion (Thikse, Shey,
Hemis)
Today we start our excursion by visiting the monastery of Thikse.
Thikse is one of the most imposing monastery in Ladakh. The monastery has 12 stories, 10 temples, a nunnery and 60 lamas in residence. It contains numerous stupas, statues, tankhas, wall painting and a large pillar engraved with the teaching of
Buddha. We can also see here a collection of Tibetan scripts. After the visit of Thikse we visit the village of Shey on the eastern bank of the Indus. Shey was the royal residence and was located at an important vantage point in the
Indus valley. According to tradition, it was the seat of power of the pre Tibetan kings. A 7.5
meter high copper statue of Buddha plated with gold and the largest of its kind, is installed here. Today we also visit the monastery of Hemis. The rich monastery of Hemis is the biggest in Ladakh and is perched on top of a pleasant green hill surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. Every year a colourful famous festival of mask dances takes place in Hemis. This monastery (Gompa) has an important library of Tibetan style books and an impressive collection of tankhas, the largest of which is displayed every 11 years.
Day 04: Leh Excursion
(Stok)
Today we drive to the small village known as Stok. The attraction of Stok remains the palace of Stok which is 200 years old. The palace and museum at Stok is a showpiece for the royal tankhas, royal crown, dresses, coins, precious stones and turquoise head dresses. Today we will visit the Stok Palace and museum.
Day 05: Leh - ChumaThang (about 140 km)
In the morning drive in jeep to ChumaThang (3965 m). This place is known for its famous medicated hot water springs where people from various parts of Ladakh come for
relieving their pains. Enroute drive past beautiful villages of Nurnis, Kery and Kadgam. The Jeep drive through this part of the
Indus valley is quite flat without much uphill or downhill drive.
We have an overnight stay in ChumaThang.
Day 06: ChumaThang - Sumdo
In the morning drive in jeep to Sumdo, a wide open village. Enroute stop at Mahe Bridge from where the road crosses to the south bank of the river. The drive from Mahe to Sumdo follows a narrow mountain gorge through green bushes. Upon arrival in Sumdo check in at the camp and later visit the monastery of Sumdo which is famous for its well preserved paintings. Overnight stay in
Sumdo.
Day 07: Sumdo - Karzok
In the morning drive to Karzok (4572 m) the only village near Tsomoriri Lake. The safari from Sumdo to Karzok is one of the most interesting as it goes through sandy deserts and rocky paths. After slowly zigzagging up to the Namshang La, the drive follows a smooth descent and drive past the isolated Thasang Tso - a small torquoise lake which appears like an
emerald of a queen's necklace. In the afternoon arrive at Karzok village. Overnight stay
in Karzok.
Day 08: Karzok
In the morning explore the Karzok area. Karzok is situated at 15000 feet and is the only permanent settlement in
Rupshu region with an approximate population of 500 people. Today we visit Karzok Monastery with its dimly lit prayer halls. Then we drive further and visit the Tsomoriri lake. The clear blue lake is one of the most breathtaking fresh water lakes in Ladakh. The lake is considered sacred by the local people of Ladakh. This lake is a breeding ground of various species of birds. We have an overnight stay in
Karzok.
Day 09: Karzok - Tsokar (about 75 km)
In the morning after having breakfast we drive further to reach Tsokar Lake (4485
m). Tsokar lake is also called as white lake because of salt deposit around it. This lake is a salt lake from where nearly all of Ladakh's salt supply comes from. We have an overnight stay in Tsokar.
Day 10: Tsokar - Leh
In the morning after having breakfast we drive backwards to Leh. Enroute we will pass beautiful villages of Rumtse, Gia and Meeru. In the evening arrive in Leh and later transferred to the hotel.
Day 11: Leh
The whole day is free at leisure to explore the local market or for independent activities.
Day 12: Leh - New Delhi
(by air)
In the morning transfer to the airport to board flight for New Delhi. Arrival in Delhi in the afternoon. The rest of the day at leisure. Rooms are available to get refresh before departing for the airport.
Day 13: New Delhi
Around midnight flight to home destination.
